Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 8, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta LETH8RIOGE June 8, 1974 CANADA GAMES SPORTSPLEX The Canada Games Sportsplex located just north of the Community College and south of Scenic Drive is rapidly approaching completion with the scheduled opening for October 1st. The Sportsplex will truly be one of the most beautiful facilities of its kind in Western Canada. The Multi Purpose Complex includes the Sportsplex with 5035 very attractive red theatre seats and additional 1000 portable seats for convention or stage shows plus it can accommodate approximately 1000 standing. The Sportsplex also houses four handball and squashball courts with viewing galleries. In the future to be developed a large exercise room. The ice surface is regulation size 200' x 85'. There is over sq. ft. of exhibit space. There will be a very attractive hard surface portable floor used to cover the ice so that all types of functions may be held even when the ice is in. The portable floor will be marked out for basketball and other sporting events. There will be a large portable stage for Rock and Western stage shows. Five large concessions with four of them looking out to the main floor. The 400 metre speed skating oval only the second of its kind in North America will also be used for public skating, minor hockey practices and in the summer time, tennis courts. There will also be over 1500 vehicle on site parking. The Sportsplex Manager Ray Lambert is temporarily located at the Civic Curling Rink. Anyone requesting information may call the Curling Rink at 327- 5637 or Recreation and Community Services offices 328-2341.
