Sifton lias assumed the premiership of Alberta under very trying circum- stances. It is the duty of every citl- en who is anxious for the welfare of the Province to reserve judgment un- til the new Premier has been given every opportunity to cope" with a most difficult situation. The Province has had a deal of unprofitable advertis- ing and the promise of the end must come to us all as a blessed relief. Mr. Sirton's' past record has been such as to inspire confidence in his ability to give the province a first- class administration. As Commis- sioner of Public Works in the old ter- ritorial legislature bis record was be- yond criticism. As Chief Justice of the province for the past seven years he has made an enviable reputation among the judiciary cf Canada. He is a clear headed man of affairs, a fluent speaker, a forcible debater, a fearless fighter, and a diplomatic leader. The relative standing of insurgents and government supporters at the pre- sent moment is a matter of very sec- ondary Importance. Claims of Indi- viduals for recognition of one form or another, whether these claims be real or imaginary must disappear be- fore considerations of greater moment Peace is the first essential to the con- tinuance of development and progress throughout the Province. Peace can be secured only through honorable compromise and we shall hope that the new premier's announcement of policy, when it Is made, will be such as to command the hearty support of the province.
