Buy Line 328-8811 West German operations Defence expenditures hike forecast OTTAWA (CP) There are indications that West German defence expenditures in Canada will increase substantially this year, Defence Minister James Richardson says. But how much that means to the Canadian business commu- nity is a secrst. Mr. Richardson made his statement in Bonn where he talked with Georg Leber, West German defence minister, whom he visited as part of a European trip to meet Canadian troops, the defence department said._____ were given. The trade department, asked for an indication of the amount of money spent in Canada by West Germany on defence, said the figures are confidential be- tween the two governments. The defence department re- ferred questions about such spending to the trade raent. It did say the West Ger- ci a n. government recently awarded a contract to CAB In- dustries of Montreal for devel- opment and manufacture of transport helicopter flight simu- lators for the West forces. A possible source for German defence spending is agreement on use of West German troops of the Canadian Forces Base at Shilo, Man. USE DISCUSSED Mr. Richardson discussed the use of the base with his West German counterpart Monday. The defence department said a decision by Canada and West Germany on the matter is ex- pected later this summer. No sum of money has been mentioned in regard to German spending on the base. Presumably, the West Ger- mans will use the base much as the British army is using the Suffkld, Alta., base for "battle- run" training. There the British have exercises involving tanks, infantry and artillery. The British are in Alberta urn der a 10-year agreement. Spending by West Germany in Canada is designed in part to offset the money spent in West Germany" for and by the Canadian troops assigned to NATO. Mr. Richardson will visit Canadian NATO troops today and Wednesday travels to Brus- sels to attend a meeting of NATO defence ministers. Not Easy! BUT WE TRV TO GIVE MORE FOR YOUR FOOD DOLIAR!
