Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 3, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, Jim. 3, 1970 THE 1ETHBRIDOE HERAID 19 Serious thought goes into training camp leaders. Canyon Church Camp At Waterton Communication Theme For Leaders By CHRISTINE PUHL Herald Staff Writer Communication was the theme and trend during the pre-camp leadership training session held in Canyon Church Camp, Waterton Lakes Nation- al Park recently. Gerry Cragg, president of the Calgary District of Alberta Camping Association, led the 42 participants from 13 years and up in sessions of group dynamics and sensitivity. Activities included window- Shattering sing-songs, spine- tingling camp fires, prayer' burning vespers, drawing from spoken directions, role-play type planning sessions and, typ- ically of camp, pouring rain. Many of the camp leaders in attendance expressed surprise at the difficulties in communi- cating with each other and a free expression of thoughts, es- pecially considering that the more noise a camper makes is usually related to the fun he is having. Inner feelings and the role each person played during dis- cussions and planning sessions were individually analyzed and helpful criticism offered by other participants. Knowing their own behavior can help leaders to aim a small camper toward more effective role in c group. OM leader summed up her own values of leadership by saying, "although we are all different we all have some- thing we can give that others need." One sensitivity session In- cluded communicating with people by using various senses other than vocal. This new means of communication proved embarrassing to some. Others found friends became strangers without the medium of fpeech. participants become so involved in the silent communi- cation that one girl became quite sad at the thought of having to part with a new- found friend. Mr. Cragg said the inhibi- tions were present because many people use words as a camouflage for their real feel- ings. A general consensus among the participants was that it is important to know the value and inner people. By putting first impressions aside, a closeness grows with under- standing. A film called, I-Thou, stress- ed the idea of not thinking oi people as but as an actu- al involvement. In dealing with people it was stated in the film that "your greatest witness is your great- ness relationship." Of merit to the leaders ing the summer camp will be the inspiration, enthusiasm, aod team work shown during the weekend of self-discovery. Dates of the camp are: July 3-10, junior girls; 9 to 11 years; July 10-17, intermediate girls, 12 to 16 years; July 17-24, ju- nior boys; July 24-31, junior girls; July 31-Aug. 7, inter- mediate boys. The main aim of the leaders during camp Js to arm each voting camper with the assur- ance that he or she is truly one loved and wanted in the com- munity. The high spirits and mis- chievous tricks that showed in the trainees faces among the weekend of activity promises a real fun-filled summer of camp- ing.
