A major resolution urged Ot- awa to implement "with top riority" a guaranteed annual ncome for all one-parent fami- ics with dependent children. A roposed amendment which vould have required some- lorm means test was resoudningly efeated. The plight of one-parent fami- ies, most often headed by wo- men, received considerable dis- :ussion at the conference. Desperately needed by all wo- men with children, regardless of income, wore day care c en- res. It was resolved by dele- ;ates that; The federal government plement immediately a policy of support for the provision, ex- pansion and improvement of day care services extended entually to include a home- lelp, child-care service Indus- iy to free women for activities outside the home. -The National Housing Acl be amended to permit loans for construction, purchase and re- novation of buildings for day care centres. A third resolution In this area, submitted by the Toronto Alexandra Hotel Dallas Hotel Garden Hotel Lethbridge Hotel Marquis Hotel Plainsman Hotel York Hotel Lethbridge Labour Club Miners Library Club El Rancho (Outrider Beverage Room Only) HOTEL AND RESTAURANT EMPLOYEES BARTENDERS INTERNATIONAL UNION LOCAL NO. 73 LETHBRIDGE j Council of Women, asking he federal government to make funds available for build- ng day care centres and to pay lalf the operating costs and 70 >er cent of capital costs during he first seven years of opera- ion, was dropped because of a lack of information on the ex- pense of such a program. Throughout the meeting, dele- gates were reminded that only if they used their "ballot power" to support women politi- cal candidates would they enjoy more representation at all lev- els of government. Intimidation of women candi- dates by national political par- ties and the tendency only to run them in "sacrifice seats" were not insurmountable prob- lems. With regard to appointed of- fice, delegates resolved to urge the Prune Minister to summon more qualified women from every province to the senate, at least until an "equitable mem- bersliip" was achieved. Ottawa also was encouraged to appoint more women judges. Speakers devoted consider- able time to the situation of tha woman not employed in tho labor force, who is dependent on the goodwill of her husband, or in the case of divorce, a judge, for financial security.
