JACKSON Props. PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY MEETING AT HALIFAX (Continued from front The Christian church today is fre- quently charged with failure to meet the needs of.the world. It has a mes- sage but with: it goes no demonstra- tion. There is no power in the word. The good news of the kingdom rings out as clearly as sweetly, as musically as ever, but in full view of those who proclaim the 'message, the giant ills of mankind stalk gaunt, grisly and un- rebuked. Poverty, greed, lust and all forms of life are gripping hard at the throat of Christian civilization and threatening its very existence so that it is possible for keen-eyed and un- sympathetic observers to raise the doubt whether on the evils that afflict the non-Christian nations are more terrible and deadly than those that are to be found amon Christian peoples. And, -sadder than all, in the heart of" the Christian church is a lurking and horrible iear that she is shorn of her ancient pow er. is the direction of hope? It lies here: When the message or the Gospel is .paralleled by a demonstra tion of the power of the church to deal effectively with the gigantic evils th'at have threatened our Christian' civil- ization, when the Christian church sets herself to discover the cause of these evils 'and inspires her people to undertake their removal the better day will dawii and the Kingdom of Heaven will begin to come. There is also the though he, does not anticipate that such will be the his jour- ney to the Yukon may have to be postponed. 'This whole trip depends on whether or not. he can make con- nections with the steamer Mackenzie: If this Hudson's Bay company's boat leaves Fort Smith for the north be- fore, word can be forwarded that tlie Minister .of the Interior is on his way north, he will have to cancel his projected trip. There is no method by -which: he could go down the Mac- kenzie ;within.'a reasonable space of time except by steamer. The -lad- son's Bay company are exerting every effort to arrange the trip so tliab the minister will not experience the De- lays which in the north country are I taken as a matter of course. Magrath's First School Bisliop Levi Harker. recalled the first school .Magrath vhad. Eleven years ago the upper storey of the Ma- grath Trading store was rudely litted up for a school -which served for two years, when the school just being vacated was erected: it was thought to be''tob big, but now they have built one twice as large and fear it' is too small. i A Splendid Programme Interspersed among the speeches was splendid, programme of musical and literary selections. A school chor- us of fifty voices conducted by An- thony Kasmussen sang patriotic songs with splendid harmony.' Little Sarah Merrill sang "Sea Gulls" "very sweet- ly.' Misses Myrtle Gibb and Jehzell Merrill' rendered "Spring" most ac ceptably. Lynn Gibb sang "I Know Not Now" in good voice. Nine girls gave a patriotic exercise "The Nine Sister Provinces" in fine style, and little Mamie Hindley captivated the audience with an especially well ren- dered .reading Trials." The whole function was-most pleas- ant-and the school has got ofTto-a start with an enthusiasm [and public spirit that augurs well for the cause of education iii that -town. Phone P.O.
