Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - June 1, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Saturday, June 1. 1974 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD-25 Fort Macleod herd under quarantine Brucellosis outbreak hits cattle ST. PAUL (CP) More than 400 cattle throughout Alberta .have been slaughtered following an outbreak of brucellosis, a disease which causes abortions and sterility among the animals. Three herds have been destroyed in the St. Paul region, 100 miles northeast of Edmonton, where the heaviest outbreak has occurred, and seven more herds are under quarantine while blood tests are being analysed. Four herds are under quarantine in the Vermilion area, two near Calgar'y, two at Wetaskiwin, one each at Drumheller, Fort Macleod and Wainwright, and another herd suspected of carrying the disease is being watched at Camrose. The federal agriculture department's health of animals division is increasing its testing programs in an effort to stamp out the disease before it spreads further into the livestock industry. One case of infestation has already been reported among hogs, which had to be destroyed by federal veterinarians in the St. Paul area. SPREADS EASILY Dr. George Eggink, federal veterinarian at St. Paul, said the disease is easily communicated from one affected animal to another and is difficult to spot and isolate. When in doubt, it is necessary to order the whole herd destroyed, the veterinarians have found. Even then, a farmer has to wait as long as six months to a year before he can rid his feedlot, pastureland and sloughs of the last traces of bacterial infection. The animals present no danger when eaten, since the disease is confined to their sexual organs. Farmers can thus recover the going market Lost in signs Robert Stanfield is partially lost behind posters of himself as he signs autographs for supporters in Courtenay, B.C. Friday.
