LCTHBHiuut juiy Edmonton builder claims alderman's son sought favors EDMONTON City developer Eskandar jhermezian told a judicial m- jimy into the city s affairs Fuesday that Aid Bill VIcLean s Doug had sought his assistance on several occasions Mr Ghermezian said that before the rezomng of a West Edmonton Shopping Centre Mte came before citv council lor second and third readings Doug McLean told him and his brother Raphael Ghermezian we 11 vote for Westgate providing we get the concessions for all the restaurants m Westgate Mr Ghermezian said he and us brother said no but that hev did not discuss Doug s omments with Aid McLean The mquirj before Mr Justice Vv ilham Morrow of the Northwest Territories Supreme Court was called alter another alderman Alex Fallow said he was offered a 000 gift by Raphael Ghermerian because Aid Fallow had voted in favor of the rezomng that would per- mit the shopping centre plann- ed bv the brothers Aid Fallow has testified he did not accept Raphael s offer made after he had already voted in favor of rezomng and that he told Ivor Dent ana the police about it Eskandar Ghermezian has told the inquiry which opened 22 that he became concerned when it appeared the rezomng bylaw might not get through council He said this prompted him to send his brother to Aid Fallow to make sure of the alderman's continued support LOBBIED OTHERS The developer in his testimony las' also in dicated he had lobbied most of the aldermen about be ing and that he first became interested in the West Ed monton site when Aid McLean during a dinner visit to Mr Ghermezian s home mentioned the property Mr Ghermezian said Tues that Doug McLean came to see the Ghermezians on one occasion with another boy he called a cook and said maybe we could give him a job Raphael said no and good He also spoke of another oc casion when Doug said he wanted a job or something Mr Ghermezian said Doug asked it the Ghermezians could get him a printing business The developer said he did not know if Aid McLean was aware of the incidents He also testified that Doug borrowed from Raphael and said don't tell my father W A Mr Ghermezian s said he thought Aid McLean must have learned of the loan because the alderman offered to repay but he said Raphael told the alderman it was between Doug and Raphael Mr Ghermezian told the in he had eight or nine meetings with Aid McLean and that some were social while some were to lobby for the Westgate rezonmg Early in Tuesday's Mr Ghermezian said Mavor Ivor Dent had told him to and influence the aldermen' to support the rezomng The developer said he felt the mayor was telling him to go and use your money and wine and dine the aldermen He said the conversation took place a charity auction but he could not recall the date DISCUSSED POLITICS Mr Ghermezian testified that Aid Una Evans had suggested he make a generous to her election campaign He said he and his brother Raphael discussed politics with Mrs Evans during a car ride shortly after a Liberal minority government was elected in 1972 He said Aid Evans told him there would likely be another election shortly and made the suggestion we should work on her campaign and give a generous donation The developer said he did not donate any money to Mrs Evans campaign in the recent federal election but that he nad made a donation to her 1972 campaign Meanwhile Mr Justice who is presiding over the inquiry said Tuesday he had authorized the obtaining of search warrants used against the Ghermezian brothers But the judge added he had not expected the search warrants to be ex- ecuted before the brothers lawyer was notified RCMP and city police ac compatued bv chief commis- sion investigator Geoige Otlley i aided the home and office of the Ghermezians shortly alter the mquny ad- joutned Friday Mi McGilhvray the brothei s lawyer said the procedure was reprehen sible and that ineparable harm had been done to his clients because ot the search warrants He said a financial inslitu- tion had advised the Ghermezians it was holding up in icspect of two projects as a result ot this search wairant business The lawyer said he would take no action to have the warrants quashed and the seized material returned Ralhei commission officials were wecome to review the material Income rises TORONTO Trans Canada Pipelines Ltd reports net income for the six months ended June 30 ol 787 000 or 42 cents a share compared with and 46 cents excluding extraordinary items tor the hrst six months of 197J The per-share figures reilect a three lor one split ol common shares approved by shareholders June 5 An ex- traordinary gam of 461 000 from the sale oi Trans-Canada Peti oleums Ltd on Jan 31 197J brought net income applicable to common shareholders lor the six months ended June 30 1973 to S25 124 000 or 91 cents a share Cashmere Bathroom ORK CLEAR APPLE or SWEETENED Pink or Yellow 6 roll pack 48 fl. oz. tins FROZEN FOODS STRAWBERRIES or RASPBERRIES Westvale Fancy 15 fl. oz.
