The Pirates trimmed the Phillies East Division lead to two games with their win at Philadelphia. Tommy Mutton's triple and Jay Johnstone's solo homer gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead but Richie Hebner. Willie Stargell and Manny Sanguillen doubled tor two runs in the Sanguillen's infield hit tied it in the eighth and the Pirates won it the ninth when Rennie Stennett doubled and Hebner singled. Ted Sizemore led off the ninth inning with a homer to power St. Louis closer to the lop and drop the Cubs into last place in the East.
