Joan Waterfield Kravitz film heartwarmer Heavens be praised. The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz cannot be dismissed as another Canadian As in the early days of the British movie industry when the home despite great work by Alfred was dismissed at the box office. Not that is our best to date English language movie. I stiil reserve Bill Fruet's Wedding in White for that slot. But does what others have failed to it touches the heart and the box office. Ted Kotcheff has made a movie and given us a honest portrait of Mordecai Richler's 19 year old on the hustle and a film of color and range. Why is Duddy so Why do we care about delight in his triumphs and accept his unlovely traits. The master stroke must be in the casting of Richard caught on the crest of his success in American Graffitti and here fulfilling all promise in as rich a characterization as has been seen in recent years. His with the on cue laugh is a grotesque with a core of real pain. He's not go- ing to be the doc- the great Jewish dream reserved for his brother. So when grandfather says that status is in owning land he's going to get forgetting that status as a person is in the love of the soil. But he's going to get by using everybody in sight but mostly by using up Duddy Kravitz. And Kotcheff has not made this a one man show. People in Buddy's life richly if sometimes too briefly. Jack Warden superb as father Henry Ramer as the big time operator for a time Buddy's Joseph Wiseman as Uncle Benny. British actor Denholm Elliott as a commie witch hunt destroyed movie direc- tor conned into making films lotsa What ensues is offensive and funny. And Madeline Lanctot as the loyal Yvette. If we had a star this could be our first Canadian star for Miss Lanctot has the warmth and honesty of Ingrid the gutsieness of a Hildegard Knef. Duddy Kravitz is a offering a real pull at our emotions. In one scene he asks his father whether he was loved by his mother. His father answers of then adds the killing stroke of why In that small remark The LARGEST ASSORTMENT of .imported styles in LETHBRIDGE can be found the reasons for some of our own and understanding of Duddy Kravitz. Mame is a frustrating musical in that it shoots its bolt at the conclusion of the first act in its splashiest production number. So despite the fact that the second half offers its best acting opportunities and best songs Buddies with Mame and Vera and Gooch's I an inevitable lag sets in. In bringing the musical to the screen the problem has not been even worse the great talent of Lucille Ball has been diminished. What a wonder it would have been if Lucy had been given her head to recreate the madcap Mame. Why not her outrageous mugging and zany All unleashed on the prohibition progressive as a store clerk in on hide bound in her disastrous first and last brush with the theatre. Of course Mame is a lady but the best a trifly wanton but always lov- ing and these are Lucille Ball situations. But in the hyper soft focus of the camera Lucy not only loses years but we lose Lucy. Better all those lines on a face that has always offered us a very gallant dame. Still enough remains to pleasure a movie going seg- ment robbed of entertainment by too much sex and sadism. There's an enchanting young Patrick in Kirby a brief but meaty appearance by Robert scene stealing by Beatrice Arthur and a divine parody by Doris Cook as Gloria Upson. And glossy sets and gorgeous clothes. And even too often seen with tear-filled the throaty contralto overwhelmed by the chorus is better than no Lucy at all. The work of Alexandra has often been the subject of film with several versions of The Count of Monte Cristo best with Robert The Man in the Iron The Fighting Guardsman and The Three Musketeers. This last has a version made by Edison in a 1921 swashbuckler with Douglas a serious but entertaining remake in 1936 with Walter a musical comedy adaptation with Don Ameche and the Ritz and yet another in 1948 with Gene Kelly and Van Heflin. The newest to follow Duddy Kravitz at the College is a combina- MANAGER KIDNAPPED ROSARIO Eric manager of Acin- the Argentine steel com- was kidnapped police reported. They said five men disguised as policemen stopped his car at gunpoint. EL RANCHO MOTOR HOTEL YOUR ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE 'Where the Action Is' NOW APPEARING in the... Canada in shuttle program By JEFF CARRUTHERS Herald Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA At almost the last possible Canada officially has announced interest in participating in the multi-billion-dollar U.S. space shuttle program. The National Research which has been associated with a number of research projects on the U.S. space shuttle program with the National Aeronautics and Space is involved in official negotiations with the U.S. to set out Canadian participa- tion in the shuttle program. And Treasury Board has given NRC to fund feasibility studies on proposed Canadian shuttle projects. Federal sources revealed today that in fact NASA has already agreed in principle to Canadian participation and that the formal Canada-U.S. negotiations are now begin- ning. A number of European countries have already decid- ed to participate in the U.S. development of a manned space vehicle system that NASA claims will soon replace rockets as the stan- dard method of moving men Parrot gets extravagant funeral KNOWLE Eng- land Most Gracious Majesty the Lord Grimsby of has been buried after lying in state for three weeks on a silken bed. The coffin was covered with carnations. Mourners stood with bowed heads dur- ing a funeral oration com- posed of poems by Shelley and Wordsworth. The affair cost about and was probably the most elaborate funeral ever staged for a said Grimsby's antique dealer David Bates. Bates told lying in state was just like that of Queen Victoria. He had a diamond ring on his his favorite piece of and a little crown on his head. There were silver palm leaves and other splen- did things around said he had re- garded His Most Gracious Ma- jesty as a personal had a place set at my table at mealtimes and I could hold a conversation with The parrot took an overdose of pills which Bates takes for a back ailment.
