Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 24, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta B.C. herring industry- changed by sex sorter VANCOUVER The British Columbia herring in- dustry has discovered sex. Until only the her- ring knew for sure whether their fellow fish were Mr. or Mrs. The invention of the her- ring sex sorter has changed all and at several B.C. plants they're divided ac- cording to sex as soon as they're dumped off the boats. More light can be passed through the body of a sexually mature female herring than a sexually mature and that little-known fact is the key to a sophisticated piece of equipment developed at B.C. Research by engineer Roy Cuthbert. The sorting machine passes a beam of light through each and a sensor on the other side of the fish controls an exit sending males and females to different conveyor belts. The sorter handles 600 her- ring a ininute or 4Vz tons an hour. Mr. Cuthbert's invention is built by Techwest Enterprises a majority-owned sub- sidiary of B.C. which has applied for patents in several countries. Fully in- the equipment sells for Herring fishing has become a revitalized industry in B.C. with increased demand from Japan for herring con- sidered a delicacy there. To facilitate the extraction of roe from female the fish must be treated in a brine solution. The brine treatment firms the herring so that the delicate egg mass can be removed without but it also causes a deterioration in the herring which must then be ground up for use as poultry or animal feed. The sex sorter saves the males from the harmful brine process and they can be mar- keted more profitably as which are more pop- ular in Europe than in North America. Seven sex sorters are already in use at B.C. packing plants and studies are under way to discover whether the machines can be used with the ABSOLUTELY UNRECOGNIZABLE are the Newly Renovated Premises of VANTA'S ECONOMY MEATS Indeed Small But Dapper CONGRATULATIONS from FRENCHY'S PLUMBING HEATING For All Your Plumbing Needs Phone Frenchy's Plumbing Heating Ltd. Sorter works with new invention Nickel deposits slowly depleted TORONTO Cana- dian nickel deposits are slowly being depleted but domestic producers should continue to play a major role in world nickel Babson's Reports says. The ore extracted here is becoming more expensive but producers should be able to maintain their positions as price Babson's says in an investment letter. Availability of hydroelectric power helps provide Canadian producers with relatively lower production costs while producers in many other areas must use more ex- pensive fossil fuels to process the ore. Canada has been the major nickel-producing country in the Western but during the next few years an increas- ing amount of the metal will originate from such areas as the Africa and Babson's says. The Western nickel industry- is dominated by several large producers. International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. controls about 50 per cent of the market. Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. and Sherr- itt Gordon Mines Ltd. in Can- ada and Hanna Mining Co. in the United States hold another 29 per cent. Between 40 and 50 per cent of total demand for nickel is in the production of stainless steel used in many consumer durable and capital goods. Nickel plating used mostly by the automotive high- nickel alloys primarily used by the aircraft industry and construction alloy steels ac- count for another 25 per cent. Dominant metal users are in highly cyclical industries and nirkel demand and pro- duction also have been cy- clical. The last peak was reached in 1970 and then a sharp and unexpected drop in demand caught many producers in the process of enlarging produc- tion Babson's says. GAINERS LTD.
