Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 24, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta THE IETHBRIDGE HERAID, FRIDAY JULY 24, 1J70 Hollywood's Money Problems Prompt Migration Of Movie Stars To TV It looks like Bie 1971-72 television season is going to be the season of stars. From Shirley MacLaine to James Stewart, the entertainment industry has never before seen such a proposed Brass move of top Hollywood stars' to television, a medium which formerly maary of them swore Fonda will star fo ABC in a generation-gap serie called The Smith Famih created by the producer of Mi Three Sons (which, inciden tally, a former Hollywood idol Fred MacMurray, stara in.) Shirley MacLaine, recently seen in Lethbridge in Tw Mules for Sister Sara, will bavi her own ABC series, to be pro ifluced in England by Sheldon Tony Curtis- Wednesday, July 29 B Days of Our Lives HJ Newlywed Game O Meet Mullett IB Peyton Place (2) Double Eurposure El Doctors fD Dating IB Romper Room (7) News (7) Luncheon 1 O Today El Another World City ID Secret Storm O Cartoon Party fB Uncle Bobby El Edge of Night (D One Life (7) Limcheon 2 Movie: Tammy and the Bachelor (D Dark Shadows El Gomer Pyle Q Mike Douglas O Movie: Those People Next Door SD Love is a Many Solendored Thing OJ General Hospital a) LJnkletter IB Magistrate's Court (T) Take 30 fB People in Conflict B Andy Griffith O) That Girl ft Edge of Night Tlnpfm-'c _i Doctor's Diary E) CronMte News IB Bewitched O Galloping Gourmet O) Smart Alec (fS TV-5 News (5) The Lucy Show Q Banana Splits fB Wynne's Pad (D Where's Huddles B Huntley-Brinkley B News 53) Popeye 8 Baseball: San Diego at Montreal IS Gomer Fyle CB The Best of Bertoo El The Virginian ID Hogan's Heroes SB Bewitched Q) My Three Sons C0 News fD Room 222 El Music Hall IB Catherine McKiunon ID Everly Brothers g) Teleprobe 7 IB Medical Centre ft Felony Squad El Medical Centre ID Smothers Brothers fB Movie: Flower Drum Song Q Gunsmoke El News ID TVS News El Tonight Show Q Hollywood and the Stars ID Merv Griffin a Andy Griffith fj Comedy Crackers (T) News IB News TeleprObe 7 IB News ft I Spy O Movie: Tarantula Meet Mullett Ob Today (g) University of die Air Stpangler) will (The Boston co-star with MOTOOROSS 350 The all-new specialist machine for the specialist rider. Like the MacLaine series, this one is backed British producer Lew Grade who plans to release it simul taneously on English and North American television. Glenn Ford has signed for comedy half-hour about a po- lice detective who takes over a youth centre. CBS has orderec the series from 20th Century Fox. Dick Van Dyke, who always better on TV than movies will return to CBS with a new series which will be filmet near his home in Phoenix. Arizorsa. James Garner, who first achieved fame as Maverick on ABC, is going back to television for an adventure series for NBC. And finally Jarnes Stewart was nabbed by Hal Kantor creator of Julia, for a series involving a college professor and the generation gap. The reason the stars have taken to the new medium is that their old business, making movies, is in bad financial straits. With the huge film com- panies setting thier eyes the youth audience, and the most successful films of recent times being low-budget efforts starring relative unknowns, the old stars must read the writing on the silver screen. It's TV or the dole. The next problem, of course, is how to keep the new series going. The unlucky experience of Doris Day, Sammy Davis Jr., and Debbie'Reynolds, must give the newcomers to TV pause for thought if not downright fear. TO PROVIDE MUSIC Henry Mancini, who has pro- vided sucli popular motion pic- ture songs as Moon River and The pays of Wine and Roses and is remembered for his unique television music for the Peter Gunn and Mr. Lucky se- ries, will be composer-conductor for the movie The Hawaiians. Book Canadians For McNair Show When the Canadian-produced Barbara McNair Show series is seen on the CTV in the fall, it will feature a strong line-up of Canadian guest talent, Tapings of the new season's programs have begun in Toronto at CFTO-TV, and the series is a co-production between CTV and Winter-Rosen Productions. The Barbara McNair Show programs currently being seen on the CTV Network are from toe 1969-70 series which was produced in Los Angeles for U.S. syndication. The new se- ries being produced in Canada will also be syndicated through- out the United States. Canadian talent already booked for 1970-71 includes: Michel Louvain, Ian and Sylvia and the Great Speckled Bird, Daniele Dorice, Elan Stewart, The Five Bells, The Noel Cow- ard Revue, Mary Lou Collins, Jan Rubes, Andy Kim, Hagood Hardy, Friendly Persuasion, Moe Koffman, Rich Little, Sandra O'Neill, Les Jerolas.
