Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 23, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta July 1974 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Research Station report Salt addition helps fight feedlot bloat Feedlot bloat may be prevented in beef cattle by adding extra salt to their diet. Bloat is caused by gas produced by bacteria in the rumen. The bacteria are required for normal diges- tion in the rumen. Normal- ly the gas is expelled by belching. But if it forms a stable foam with the rumen the rumen presses on the and causes suffocation. We have found when salt was increased from 0.5 per cent to four per cent in fine particle high concentrate the rumen characteristics associated with bloat high viscosity and high were reduced. Earlier studies at the Lethbridge Research Sta- tion had shown that bloat occurs when the feed is in fine particles but is greatly reduced when the feed is coarse The rumen contents of cows fed a fine particle feed with 0.5 per cent salt had large numbers of broken bacterial cells and cells with slimy materials on the surface. The con- stituents of these broken along with the bacterial produce a highly vicous rumen fluid in which the gas becomes trapped. NO SLIME In the rumen contents of cows fed a fine particle feed containing four per cent the cells were not ruptured and there was no slimy material on the cell surfaces. The extra salt increased water intake and also the flow of water through the rumen. Both factors reduc- ed the formation of stable foam and prevented bloat. The condition in the rumen of the cows fed four per cent salt was similar to that in the rumen of cows fed coarse feed. Feeding four per cent salt to control bloat should COMBINE MOTORS CHRYSLER INDUSTRIAL SIXES AND V8's AVAILABLE FROM For complete details BAALIM WHOLESALE LTD. 205 1 0th Street South Phone 327-8587 or Ihe GARAGE or SERVICE STATION NEAREST be considered a temporary measure. The feed should be in coarse particles to keep the addition of salt to a minimum because the high salt level in manure may salinize the soil and reduce crop production. Losses from feedlot bloat are estimated to exceed million per year in Canada. Our results on the effects of adding four per cent salt to a feedlot diet show another way of reducing these losses. These fin- dings will enhance the use of grains that have appeared to cause feedlot bloat. About 62 per cent of the U.S. Department of Agriculture budget for 1972 was used for programs that were not strictly farmer oriented such as foreign food distribution and improvement of natural resources.
