Some of the sharpest losses were recorded in the gold sector of the market as investors reacted to tumbling gold prices on international bullion and a marked reduction in trad-Ing activity. During the week, the gold index of the Toronto market fell 9.88 points, closing Friday at 211.71, its lowest level in a month. On Wall Street, prices plunged sharply lower early In the week with the Dow Jones industrial average touching its lowest level in more than lour months Thursday. A strong rally Friday helped recover most of the losses, but prices in several sectors ended tho week with fractional declines. The Dow Jones Industrial average of 30 key blue-chip issues lost 1.81 points during the week, closing Friday at 920.45. Volume at New York was 76.93 million shares, up from 09.33 million a week earlier. Ease metal Issues, one of the most unattractive sectors of tho market to investors in recent months, edged fractionally higher in quiet trading this week. The base metal index of the Toronto market rose .09 points to 91.75. Western oils stocks fell victim to profit-taking during most of the five sessions. One analyst said many investors appeared to be switching Issues within this sector in anticipation of first-half earnings.
