"We're not trying to change anyone. We're just encourag- ing spiritual said spokesman Visua Karma das Brahmacari, the taOest of two disciples who chanted at the 4th Avenue and 6th Street S. intersection. A former Roman Catholic from Montreal, Visua Karma explained he converted to Bare Krishna beliefs because the Indian faith encourages God- consciousness in all areas of life. EXCITEMENT "I guess we caused a little excitement he said after concluding a 10-minute prayer chant on the street "I guess the people passing by haven't seen anyone chant a Krishna mantra before." Visua Kanna translates his Indian name as meaning "a celibate student servant of the Chief Engineer." Krishna disciples progress Uirough four stages according to physical age students, six to years; household- ers, 25 to 40 years; retired life, 40 to 50 years; renouno- ed order of life, over 50 years. There are many adherents who engage in prayers, cha- nting and study of Krishna writing without shaving heads and adopting the sim- ple saffron robes, Visula Kar- ma explained. FOOD PROGRAM "Our income is derived from donations and the sale of books, soap, incense and be said. "We op- erate a food program for transient youth and other needy citizens. Our meals are vegetarian." Disciples of Krishna believe they can be freed from the troubles of a materialistic and spiritually bereft world by regularly chanting the holy name: "Hare Krishna, Hare Krish- na, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare." Krishna consciousness was introduced to the western about eight years ago by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prab- hupada of India. Disciples are taught that at any time, at any stage of life and in any part of the world anyone can freely chant the holy name of the Lord and thus make pro- gress on the path back home, back to Godhead. Lord Krishna is said to be an incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. STAMPEDE The Southern Alberta visi- tors said they were travelling across Canada by bus. After visiting the Calgary Stam- pede, they swung south be- fore a visit to Edmonton and .then a return journey home to Eastern Canada. "Most of the people we talk to are either seriously interst- ed in Hare Krishna philoso- phy or are Visua Karma said. "We avoid ar- guing with people. Rather, we prefer and enjoy spiritual conversations with sincere people of any faith." Visua Karma explained his robe, cotton shirt, sneakers, bead bag were al- most the sum total of his ma- terial possessions. His only other articles, be claims, are a change of doths which is washed and worn on alter- nate days. CHURCH OF JESUS LATT!
