Kennedy in 1962 for his leadership in the Cuba missile crisis even he now says Kennedy's decisiveness was legend, not fact. Achcson, who had served as state secretary under President Harry S. Truman and was among Kennedy's closest advisers during the October, 1962, crisis, told Kennedy in an Oct. 23, 1962, letter; "I congratulate you on your leadership, firmness and judgment over the past touchy weeks. We have not had these qualities at the helm in this country at all times. It is good lo have tliem again." Life magazine has printed excerpts of an Acheson interview with Ihe British Broadcasting Corp. in which the former White House adviser also said that the late Robert F. Kennedy, then attorney-general, was guilty of "high school Ihought" in reference to handling the missile problem that ended with a United Slaies naval blockade of "uba lo keep Sovicl missiles off lire island. In Ihe interview, which has not ycl been broadcast, Achcson said President Kennedy "did not have incisivcness and lie was out of his depth where hi was." "I bad to say Ihis because I know it's going lo lie misunderstood, his reputation is greater because of the tragedy of his death. "II is a legend; it is not the ncl." Acheson said in response o Ihc interviewer's comment lal Kennedy had generally iccn crcdiled wilh being decisive during the crisis. In response lo r c p o r t e r s' queries, the late president's >rolhcr, Senator Edward M.
