About strikes and strikebreakers? About women in industry? CBC-TV will explore these and other subjects of interest to both employees and employ- ers when the new series, Pay- day, debuts Sunday, July 22 at 2 p.m. Host Bob Oxley looks at some of the more interesting topics All-star baseball coverage planned Curt Gowdy, Tony Kirbek, Jim Simpson and Maury Wills have been selected as commen- tators for coverage of major league baseball's 44th Ail-Star Game from the Kansas City Royals' stadium Tuesday, July 24, on the NBC television and radio networks. Gowdy and Kubek, NBC's premiere broadcasting team for baseball's Game of the- Week (Saturdays) and Monday Night Baseball, will be at the microphones in Kansas City's sparkling new stadium. Simpson and Wills will pro- vide the description on a radio hookup that not only will blan- ket the nation, but will reach a world wide audience through the facilities of the American Forces radio and television ser- vice. More than 220 television sta- tions across the United States will carry NBC's colorcast of the mid-summer classic, and it will be telecast In Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia and Nicar- agua. Children's telecast presents the gospel A new children's program re- cently made its debut -on tele- vision when Hamilton's Channel 11 commenced ser- ies, Nuts 'n Bolts 'n Things. The 13 programs are currently oc- cupying the a.m. Sunday morning spot. The Canadian produced pro- gram is the joint production of Scripture Union of Canada and the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Scripture Union executive di- rector, Maurice Eastwick and Presbyterian minister, Gordon Fish teamed up to produce the series of 13 shows. The set of programs is to be offered to interested churches for fall showing on cable tele- vision across Canada. Each program centers around an old-fashioned general store and features puppetry, dialog, singing, interviews, and story- telling. The sponsoring organizations see the series as a positive con- tribution to television diet for children and as an effective way to communicate the Christ- ian message to the younger set. The Hamilton station's ready acceptance of the program has encouraged them to consider a wider showing on other regu- lar commercial outlets. m the management-union level and comes up with a variety of riewpoints, Appearing on the series with Oxley will be Richard J. Need- ham, who has been described as the "resident who merrily pokes notes in some of the time honored myths which exist on both sides. Needham is a Globe and Hail columnist. INFORMATIVE Payday is something new, lopefully, something unique. It is a labor series that tries to >resent the issues without tak- ng sides. It will be informative, thought- provoking and entertaining all at the same time. It will deal with many subjects which have >een considered sacrosanct, and many which have been con- sidered out and out taboos for the television medium. On the first program in the series, Payday will look at Un- ions In The Office, and study he recant attempts by organ- ized labor to move into the white-collar field. CROPS-SECTION In addition to Bob Oxley and Richard Needham, this first show will feature Professor Frances Bairstow, director of the industrial relations centre for McGill University, and Pro- fessor Maurice Hecht of the University of Toronto's school of business administration.
