Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 20, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Defence Minister Cadieux May Get New Post OTTAWA (CP) Leo Cadieux has shunned the political limelight and concen- trated on running his depart- ment since becoming defence minister three years ago. Now for the first time, his po- litical future is the subject of public speculation. His name figures prominently among those being tossed about in the usual dog-days talk of possible cabinet changes. The minister, 62, Is consi- dered' a prime candidate for nomination as Canada's next ambassador to France. The present ambassador, Paul Beaulieu, returned to Paris recently following a lengthy period of illness and convalescence. But he is known to be still in less than perfect health, and there have been suggestions that a less demand- ing post will be found for him. Some reports say Mr. Cad- ieux, former newspaper man and war correspondent first elected to the Commons in 19G2, would like to get out of politics. HAS PROPER STYLE Suave and courtly, with a knack for being sharp on the uptake without giving offence, he is regarded as having good qualifications for a successful diplomat. Not that he would be bumping anyone else out of a job. All the French-speaking career officers with sufficient seniority to be considered for Paris have re- cently been appointed to new jobs in the external affairs de- partment. They include Paul Trernblay, associate undersecretary o 1 state; Yvon Beaulne, ambassa- dor to the Unietd Nations, and Marcel Cadieux, ambassador in Washington. The defence minister, though his mother tongue is French, speaks impeccable English as well. In the Commons he repre- sents the Quebec riding of La- belle. The rub Insofar as an appoint- ment to Paris now is concerned u that Mr. Cadieux has a job ahead of him in the defence de- partment. The government has promisee white paper on defence policy for this fall. To satisfy a prom- tee contained in last year's throne speech, the policy docu- ment should technically be placed before Parliament soon after it reconvenes Oct. 5, he- fore the old session is prorogue! and a new one begins. MAY WISH TO BE THERE Mr. Cadieux, after three years as minister and two pre- vious years as associate minis tw, presumably will want to be arotmd to see that the contents of the white paper are to his lik- tng, perhaps to table the docu- ment personally. The solution would be to make any appointment of Mr. Cadieux to Paris effective only after the policy paper has been made public. His time as defence minister has not been easy. When he .took over the portfolio from Paul Hellyer, the fortes to him to provide a period o stability and relative tranquill By following the unification up- beavals of the preceding years Instead, the department was hit by Prime Minister Trudeau's policy review that resulted in a decision to halve Canada's NATO contribution and reduce LEO CADIEUX To Paris? Loitering Banned VICTORIA (CP) The Brit- ish Columbia cabinet has tight- ened regula t i o n s controlling public use of provincial govern- ment building and grounds, ban- ning loitering and instituting files up to for violators. NAMES AMERICAN ATHENS (AP) Aristotle Onassis, the Greek shipping magnate, has named the first American to a high post in his airline, Olympic Airways. The appointment of Victor H. Har- rell to be a vice-president of Olympic was announced Sun- day. Harrell had been president of Golden West Airlines. forve strength by men to Mr. Cadieux swallowed the new policy though he didn't like it. Among the troops, he is given credit for speaking out Mrs. Firestone Wins Damages PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) Time Inc. has been ordered to pay Mary W. Firestone, di- vorced wife of millionaire Rus- sell A. Firestone Jf. in compulsory damages for an ar- ticle published in the Dec. 22, 1967, issue of Time magazine. The judgment resulted from Mrs. Firestone's charge that she suffered mental anguish from a story concerning her 1967 di- vorce from Firestone, heir to the Firestone rubber fortune. Public Whipping Proposed ROME (AP) The Ital- ian government has re- buffed a butcher who wanted to rent the ancient Colosseum for tin public whipping of Rome's city council. The government said law No. 340 of March 30, 1905, allows use of the Colosseum only for artistic and cultural shows. The ministry of public in- struction, to which the ap- plication was mailed, ob- viously did not consider the public flogging qualified. R o m e 's independent H Messaggero says a good 'whipping of public officials might actually be "a his- toric cultural event." Rome's streets, still lit- tered after repeated strikes of sanitation men during the first half of this year, prompted butcher Alberico Amati to propose his civic venture. Man Charged With Miirder BEAVERLODGE ert Harold Reed, 34, of Valhal- la, was charged with non-capi- tal murder after a shooting in- cident. Juan Carlos Ongania, attended a Roman Catholic mass for the former president with other government officials and armed forces chiefs.
