Mid-summer show the Hire-a-Student office .vas swamped with applications for work by the halfway point of the summer school break. The student placement of- fice placed of the students who registered with them. The placements were up about 50 over last year's mid- summer placements and stu- dent applications increased by about 200 over the same period a year ago A surprise in student place- ment this summer is the sharp increase in the number of students under 16 years old who are attempting to find employment. Garrett Palmer. Hire-a- Student co-ordinator. said Wednesday his office has handled about 500 applications from students under 16 years of age. He described the applications from that age group as being lot than received in the summer of 1973 The Hire-a-Student office still has a list of about 600 students who are looking for work during the last half cf summer. most of the students still looking for work are unskilled and the jobs listed at the office are for ex- perienced workers in the food service industry. Construction and irrigation companies provided the most jobs for students this summer but job openings in those fields are rare now. Mr. Palmer said his office has been successful this year than other years in filling employer's requests for casual Some students are able to work steady throughout the summer by moving from one casual job to he said. One of the six staff members at the Hire-a- Student office has been assigned to the task of placing students in casual jobs this a move Mr Palmer credits with improved record in casual help placement. One source of casual jobs this week is the annual Whoop-Up Days extravagan- za have placed an awful lot of people at the fair Mr Palmer pointed out.
