Friday, July 16, 1971 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 7 WALTER Matthau has nolch- ed a special place for himself in Hollywood. A form- er B-movie bad guy, he has of late been polishing up the cha- racter he portrayed in Oscar- winning style in The Fortune Cookie: that of the slightly de- cadent, aging slouch on the make for an easy way out. In Plaza Suite, currently at the Paramount Theatre, he brings all his estimable skill and oily unflappability to roles in three skits, tied loosely by the setting, a large New York hotel. Now that he has reached the zenith in his genre of acutely- acted ennui, viewers might ask themselves if the price hasn't been too high. Matthau is a man dead around the eyes, a posture without a point. And in Neil Simon's play he is match- ed with writing of style and trifling depth. In the first of the playlets, Matthau tries to explain to his wife of 23 years (played val- inalf.y by Maureen Staplcton) his reason for having an affair will, his young secretary. When it gets down to it, it seems he has reached all the goals he set himself happy marriage, children, business success and he cannot en- dure having nothing more to strive for. one-liners and bittersweet sit-1 minor shots taken in Chicago where the action is supposed to take place. But the timidity plays, his refusal to through on basically themef, has come to the lore in Plaza Suite. The first skit targets in on a situation of potential pathos: the wracking of a middle-aged marriage by sheer weight of time Occasionally the author lets the grief show through. But he can't seem to stand it for long and backs off by tossing in yet another glib line. Although the three actresses are women of thespian strength, the movie revolves around Matthau. Certainly Si- mon could do far worse than Mattbau to interpret his play.
