Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 16, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Friday, July 16, 1971 THE IETHBRIDCE HERAID 15 HEREFORD QUEEN Added color and charm at the Lethbridge 4-H Calf Show at the Lethbridge Exhibi- tion Pavilion, this year was provided by the 1971 Here- ford Queen Debby Thiessen of Coutts. Miss Thiessen, who presented ribbons to winners of 13 south 4-H clubs at the show, was selected at the annual Hereford tour in the Del Bonita area June 19. Twelve queen candidates en-, tertained 600 guests at lunch during the tour. Mark String- am presented Miss Thiessen and her Princesses Karen Jenkins of Pincher Creek and Beverly Robinson of Del Bonita with western hats. ____ Ann Landers DEAR ANN LANDERS: Recently we went away on a trip and left our beloved little terrier ta a kennel for five days. The morning of Hie sixth day my husband went to get lum. The owner checked the kennel, returned and said, "I'm sorry. The dog is dead." He had no idea, what had happened but promised to have an autopsy performed and let us know. The Mowing day the veterinarian at tte animal hospital drew a diagram of the dog's ttimat and explained that he had apparently "barked himself to death." I have never heard of such a thing and wonder if perhaps they invented this story to cover up for their neglect. Will you please check this out and let m-3 know the C. R. DEAR L. C. R.: A veterinarian of the Lake Shore Animal Hospital and Dr. Harry Booth, a member of the Grievance Committee for the Chicago Veterinary Medicine Association both said it is virtually impossible for a dog to bark himself to death. The dog may have worked himself into a state of near hysteria, which could bring on a heart attack. Or per- haps the dog barked a great deal and become hyperventilated and went into shock. DEAR ANN LANDERS: For twenty years I Wave been the constant companion of a man who is separated from his wife by mutual agreement. His children are married and have very little to do with him. He is getting up in years and lias had two serious illnesses. The last was nearly fatal. Lately I nave been deeply depressed and wondering what would happen if he should die and 1 could not be at his side among the mourners. Do you agree that after sH these years 1 should have some status, if only by virtue of the fact that I am the woman be loves? What can 1 do now, at this point in my life, to get some peace of mind? The unfairness of this situation is driv- ing me mad.-Back Street In Iiriianapolis. DEAR BACK STREET: Your interest in "status after 2< years in the shadows is interesting indeed. In our society there is very little status for the mistress of a married man. The wife gets it all. I may sound like, a hardbitten old battle-axe but my advice is to stay in the shadows. That's where he wants you. If he had wanted it any other way lie would have married you. DEAR ANN LANDERS: I know for a fact that young people listen to you before they listen to their own mothers Please, say something to brides ir, regard to thank-you note for wedding presents. 1 am holding in my hand a note which has no saluUtio of any kind. It could be meant for anybody. Here it is: "Thanks for UK silver tray. We are very busy now getting Ellen and Ralph." I spent halt a day shopping for that gift. It was not just a trinket, cither in terms of time or money spent. When 1 received this nothing little note, 1 was mad at myself for having bothered at all. 1 hope you will print this letter so the girls who scribble little two sentence thank-you tellers will sec it and learn something. --Disgusted. DEAR D.' Some girls are unable to write a gracious note because they lack the training and experience. I feel sorry for them because they will be handicapped by this ineptness all The only girls who are worse off are the clods who don't acknowledge gifts at all and I can tell you, their name is legion.
