Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - July 15, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta Ann Landers DEAR ANN LANDERS: 1 once read In your colutnn that homosexuals could not get married in church. I quote from a clipping which proves you are wrong. Dateline San Francisco: "In a ceremony performed in a Methodist church, two men promised Sunday to "live together, love, honor and cherish each other.' At the close, the Rev. Lloyd Wake said, 'I pray God's blessing upon you and the best of life for you both.' The two participants exchanged rings and embraced in a shower of red carnations thrown by friends. The event in Glide Memorial Methodist church was witnessed by twenty persons and was called a 'covenant ceremony' by the minister." How about ten lashes with a red carnation? - El Monte, California DEAR EL: I stated that marriage between members of the seme sex is not legal in any of the 50 states--and this is correct. A ceremony does not necessarily constitute a legal marriage. As the minister said, it was a "covenant"-which means an agreement>-but this does not mean the couple is considered married in the eyes of the law. * * * DEAR ANN LANDERS: I am not permitted to discipline our son. My husband says it's HIS job. Our little girl gets plenty of discipline from her falher, however. All arguments are settled in favor of the boy-against her. The boy knows his dad is on his side so he treats us all like dirt. He has been in trouble at school for bullying younger children and mouthing off at teachers. I keep telling my husband this is the result of his training at home but he doesn't believe it. I am afraid when our son gets out into the world be will be unable to hold a job because he cannot accept criticicism or any form of control. The bickering and fighting in our home is terrible. Our daughter usually ends up crying, with me comforting her. The boy and his father seem always to be against us. Do you see something here that I don't see? What's the solution? -War On The Home Front DEAR WAR: I see a mother and dad who desperately need joint counseling. The problem is between you two. Your children are the battering rams. One of the basic rules for disciplining children is that parents must agree on what position they will take and stick together. When children discover they can pit Mom against Dad, they divide and conquer. I urge you and your husband to get some joint counseling. When you resolve your personal problems and learn how to live together in peace, you will not have so much trouble with your children. * * * How far should a teen-age couple go? Can necking be safe? When does it become too hot to handle? Send for Ann Landers' booklet, "Necking And Petting-What Are The Limits?" Mail your request to Ann Landers in care of Canada Wide Feature Service Limited, 245 St. James Street West, Montreal 126, enclosing 50 cents in coin and a long, stamped, self-addressed envelope. --Thursday, July 13, 1971 - THE LETHBRIOGE HERALD - 13 Dairy princess competition open Alberta's dairy industry is looking for a new princess, who will be chosen during the Edmonton Klondike Days Exposition, July 22 to 31. Cups, etc. must be brought. The homemaker BY ELIZABETH BARTMAN, DISTRICT HOME ECONOMIST Bananas in all their golden and brown spotted goodness are sometimes a special bargain for the shopper. I'm a great believer in bargains and using up the last morsel of food. Freezing bananas is a technique which you may find handy for storing your sm*plus. Bananas can be frozen only in the puree form; they are not successfully frozen as slices in hyrup or in fruit cup. Prepare banana puree by using fully and uniformly ripe, but firm, bananas. Avoid contamination by washing and peeling with care. Mash. To avoid darkening, work quickly and add 1 to 2 teaspoons of the following syrup for each banana used. To make thin syrup, dissolve 1 cup granulated sugar in 3 cups water over heat. Cool. Add % teaspoon ascorbic acid just before using, to avoid loss of vitamin C. Mix banana puree and syrup well; package and freeze immediately. This will keep up to six months. Thaw quickly or use the puree frozen or partially frozen. The surface may darken slightly. Use fresh ripe bananas in these recipes: Banana Brownies 1 package brownie mix 2 overripe bananas Follow directions on brownie package, substituting mashed bananas for liquid. Add nuts for a more delicious flavour. Banana Pudding 1 package instant butterscotch pudding 1 overripe and finely mashed banana Follow package directions, substituting banana for one cup milk. Bananas with Rhubarb 4 cups (1 pound) diced rhubarb VA cups sugar Dash salt 2 bananas. In 1% quart casserole, combine the rhubarb sugar and salt. Cover. "Bake in a slow oven (325 deg.) till tender, about 45 minutes. Chill. Slice bananas into individual serving | dishes and spoon rhubarb over. Makes 6 servings. Population control imperative to survival PUBLIC BINGO $500 JACKPOT 16 GAMES LETHBRIDGE ELKS LODGE ROOM (Upstairs) EVERY THURS-8 p.m. EDMONTON (CP)-The survival of life of all kinds depends on population control through planned parenthood Scandinavian delegates told the congress of the International Federation of Business and Professional Women. Women in the four Scandinavian countries, who proposed the resolution, consider family planning "a fundamental human right." said Swedish delegate Hilla Lindeberg of Stockholm. Information must be made freely available to all people so they can know how to plan and space their families, she told the 1,400 delegates from 40 countries. The resolution called for the national federations to support and sponsor education in responsible parenthood through the United Nations and national governments and organizations. The resolution was strongly supported by the Indian delegate, Abha Maiti of West Ben- gal. She told the congress that India has recognized the problem and has nationally - sponsored programs of birth-control information. The resolution on birth control was passed with only two of the 40 nations-Argentina and Malawi - opposing it. The resolution had been defeated at the last congress three years ago because the 65-21 for vote was ruled to have failed because there were 57 abstentions. The second major resolution Friday concerned equal sharing of family responsibility. This resolution also was submitted by the federations of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The aim of both men and women should be to become full - citizens, said Mrs. Lindeberg. "Women won't be equal until men share the responsibility in the home." The resolution, which passed, urges national federations to influence public opinion to create shared responsibility by working spouses for the upkeep of the home. love is... .., that special feeling for that special someone. ciiw wri let u*ana iuui Open Till 9 p.m. Tonight and Friday Night!
