Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 15, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Wedneidoy, July 15, 1970 THE LETHBRIDG! HERAID 13 Notley Urges Work Camp Inquiry EDMONTON (CP) Grant Notley, leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party, said here the Alberta Human Rights Out Of Control PRINCE ALBER'I Sask. (CP) A provincial natural resources department spokes- man today said Ihe forest fire situation east of Uranium City in northwestern Saskatchewan was "still out of control." Commission should investigate allegations of discrimina 11 o n against Canadian workers by a Los Angeles based company. The company, Halph M.. Par- sons construction, fired all 770 construction workers at the site of a gas plant near miles west of Edmonton, follow- ing a brief sit-in last day. They were expected to be rchired this week following a meeting Monday night between representatives of the unions in- volved and the company. Mr. Notley said in a state- ment there is "a certain irony" in the allegations of discrimina- tion because one of the major arguments in favor of foreign- based firms is the employment they create. "If even now that employ- ment factor is in doubt, the ar- gument against foreign owner- ship becomes even stronger." Some of the workers said dur- ing the sit-down strike-that Par- sons was discriminating 'against Canadians in its hiring policies. Kevin Garner, a carpenter, said the U.S. supervisors were "running the place like a con- centration camp." Several Ca- nadians have been called "nig- gers" by the supervisors, he said.
