Jack Dirt, the development otticcv in charge of the pro- ject, also is cool, although he does not write the project oft completely. He admits that "everybody is dead against it and it docs look like a pretty wild goose chase if you ask me." Money for the expedition was made available in Janu- ary after the territorial coun- cil rejected a proposal for an expensive musk-ox ranching operation on a commercial basis. BLOWS ACROSS TUNDRA The search theory is based on musk-ox shedding their un- dercoats in April and May be- fore the hot weather with the tufts of wool blowing across the tundra and snagging on willows along the Thelon River. Paul Kwaterowsky, head of the territorial wildlife divi- sion, opposed the expedition from the start, saying musk- ox do not congregate in large herds but in groups up to 20 animals. He said the wool is spread in relatively small amounts over a vast area, and recalled a personal attempt to gather some. "I'm rather persistent, but I gave up after 10 minutes be- cause it was not worthwhile. The wool is scattered over an extremely wide area." The musk-ox cannot IHJ sheared like a sheep because they would die in the chill temperatures. SAND GRAVEL ASPHALT TOLLESTRUP SAND AND GRAVEL Construction Co. Ltd.
