THE WELL CHILD Best To Seek Cause Of Uterine Bleeding By WAYNE G. BRANDSTADT, M.D. Written for Newspaper Enterprises Assn. Cancer Machine At Edmonton EDMONTON (CP) A ma chine wlu'ch would bring greatei hope to cancer victims will start treating most types of the dis ease later this year at the Dr W. W. Cross Cancer Institute The machine, a linear accel erator, allows deeper penetra tion of radiation, less shadowin; by bone and less absorption o radiation by neighboring tissue Only one other Canadian city Hamilton, has a similar acceler- ator capable of producing up to volts of energy for fir- ing into malignant tumors. Dr. J. G. Pearson, director oi the institute's radiology depart- ment, said that unlike other forms of radiotherapy the accel- erator will cause no tissue dam- age en route to the less we want it the pa- tient will feel no discomfort. "The treatment period will be about 30 seconds for each angle vie want to radiate from, com- pared with two or three minutes for cobalt-60, 10 minutes 20 years ago and an hour 40 years ago." DOESN'T BURN SKIN Dr. Pearson said there is us- ually neither skin burning nof radiation sickness. Showers Aid Forest Fire Situation EDMONTON (CP) The Al- berta Forest Service, aided by widespread showers, extin- guished 15 forest fees during the weekend. Six fires, three in the Lac La 'Biche, forest district, two in the Footner lakes and one in the Grande. Praries forests, con- tinued to burn today. Extremely dry conditions exist in the mountain areas and six areas of Jasper National Park remain closed. FOR DAILY INSPIRATION Dial-A-Thought OUR NEW NUMBER A computer outside an eight- foot-thick wall plans and con- trols the amount of radiation emitted. "If someone inadvertently walks into the treatment room while the equipment is operat- ing, the equipment immediately shuts down automatically." Dr. Pearson said that the smaller the tumor the greater the chances are that the cancer can be cured, and he stressed that the earlier the cancer is detected the greater chances are for it being cured. U.S.-Trained Mercenaries In Assault SAIGON (AP) United States-trained mercenaries in Cambodia launched mortar and ground attacks Monday against a strong Communist command force in the mountain resort of KM Rom, 50 miles west of the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. KM Rom fell to the Commun- ist command after the 300-man Cambodian garrison ran out of ammunition and fled. About 10 of the garrison who reached government lines said they were forced to abandon about 40 dead and wounded. The government sent in a re- lief force to try to retake KM Rom. The force is made up of Cambodians whose homes are in South Vietnam. They were trained and paid by U.S. Special forces (Green Berets) in South Vietnam. VIETNAM QUIET As the fighting picked up in jambodia, it died down in South Vietnam, where the U.S., and South Vietnamese commands reported only minor, light con- acts. Gen. William C Westmoreland said a North Vietnamese offen- sive is possible as the American roops withdrawal continues. The general is on a week-long inspection tour in South Viet- nam, his first visit since he re- linquished command of U.S. forces in South Vietnam two years ago. Q _ j am a mother, 21. Over a year ago I started spotting blood. My doctor isn't very con- cerned about it. What could cause it and what do you ad- vise? A Possible causes include erosion of the uterine cervix, uterine polyps, endometriosis and fibroids. It may or may not be serious. In any ease, the cause should be determined. Q are tlie symptoms of cancer of the uterus? A Spotting between men- strual periods is the earliest sign, but this doesn't necessar- ily mean cancer. A positive Pap smear would confirm the diagnosis. Q I have heard that if woman has intercourse duru her menstrual period she wi! get cancer of the uterus. Is thi true? A Although intercourse a this time is normally avoided I know of no evidence that i Clean-Up Orders Ignored EDMONTON (CP) J. Don- ovan Ross, Alberta lands and forest minister, said here thai department officials have been ordering clean-ups of drillinf operations in the Swan Hills oi! field for three years. Forestry officials' inspections of sites and orders to the oi companies have been largely overlooked by the companies, he said. "The companies haven't been taking the department as ser- iously as we would have liked." OPERATIONS CLOSED Recent oil spills in the Swan Hills region of northern Alberta spurred the Alberta Oil and Gas Conservation Board to close two oil drilling operations of Home Oil Co. Ltd. until the sitcj are cleaned up and to launch a province-wide survey of oilfield pollution conditions. Dr. Ross said the primary reason for a combined1 inspec- ion by oil and gas conserva- lon board officials and fores- try employees is to put some muscle behind demands for changes in drilling operations. Oil companies operating the wells in the area will come under the scrutiny of the "inspection and enforcement he saiet. During the last three years, the lands and forests depart- ment has issued orders to the companies regarding fire dan- gers, improper cutting of trees and oil spillage hazards, Dr. Ross said. Clean-up operations at the two closed Home Oil installa- tions -were expected to be com- pleted early this week. would predispose to cancer. Q I am going through the menopause. My docotr says he should do a D and C. What is this and what is it for? A A dilatation and curet- tage is a scraping of the uterine wall to remove polyps and other causes of uterine bleeding. 6 My uterus is tipped backward. Is there any chance I can become pregnant? Would an operation help? A In most women a dis- placed uterus can be corrected by wearing a ring pessary. The condition is no bar to pregnancy but it may in some cases cause abortion. Surgical correction is rarely advised because the con- dition would recur following childbirth. Q What causes endome- triosis and how can it be cured? A The cause of this non- malignant growth in the pelvis is unknown. It may produce no symptoms or cause menstrual cramps and interfere with con- ception. Women who conceive in spite of their endometriosis are often cured by their preg- nancy. Treatment with norethy- nodrel, an ovarian hormone, for six to' 12 months often re- sults in a cure. Surgical re- moval of the abnormal tissue may be used as a last resort. Q My doctor says I have an enlarged uterus. What could cause this? A A fibroid or a malignant tumor. IIOAWTED WA? Chic Young Witnesses May Sue Physicians HEGINA (CP) A Toronto lawyer says at least six Regina doctors have refused to treat Jefeovah's Witnesses and the re- ligious sect may take legal ac- tion against them. The lawyer, W. Glen How, said he has been told of anes- ;heticians in the city who won't reat Witnesses because the Witnesses decline to accept >lood transfusions. The three of hearts was returned at trick two and the trick was won in dummy by the queen. A spade was led to declarer's jack as East followed with the four.
