Joan Waterfield Supercops film knockabout comedy There must be some joy in the New York Police Department these days. Having uncovered one honest cop in Frank two more turn up in a subspecies of the same genre called The Supercops. This time it's more knockabout comedy than knockout thriller and for sheer entertainment none the worse for that. Ron Leibman and David Selby portray the controversial team of N.Y. Dave Greenberg and Bob Hantz whose spectacular and unorthodox crime busting methods earned them the sobriquet of Batman and Robin. The pair gyrate through a frantic patchwork of black dope-pushing constant demotion to desk jobs and pressure from the And the film butterflies between the brutal realism of its locale and a crafty send-up of the caps and robbers theme. This is where the audience has to come to terms with what it is seeing. There's no laughter in children slaughtered by in the filth of the black ghetto. Indeed the honesty of this brutal scene splendidly delineated by director Gordon Parks could work against audience acceptance of The Supercops But director Parks is clever On this through first-rate supporting characters to the surface PEPSI COLA'S RADIO AND TV LISTINGS are listed by the Radio and Televison Stations. The film is a convincer primarily by the clever use of faces somewhat unknown to the movie-going public Dan Frazer is a standout as the police captain who backs the split between an honest desire to break up the Hayes gang and get himself promoted out of Precinct 21. There's Joseph Slrola as the tough lieutenant who has Greenberg tied to a switchboard and Hantx counting toilet Andy the epitome of the shyster lawyer. And Leibman and Selby who perform with great and often hammy gusto are not a team that United Artists will drop in a hurry. Indeed the closing sequence is a teaser that promises a future whether on the big screen or on televisision remains to be seen. It s gritty replete with the now choicer five-letter words and for a specific audience. Thankfully Supercops does not suffer from over a syndrome killing many and better movies. It's wrapped up in a tautly episodic but neat 90-mmutes. Should you care to keep your eyes peeled you'll find the real-life Greenberg and Hantz who served as technical advisors for Supercops in minor roles as Detectives Basoff and Neel. Biggest television coup of the year has been pulled by the CBC in their purchase for fall show of the Emmy- internationally acclaimed BBC serial Downstairs. This chronicle of a stiff upper lipped Edwardian Era family and their domestic staff has received unbelievable accolades. And Lady the rest of the elegant Bellamy clan and their staff of eight servants bid fair to surpass the Forsythe family in audience response. Happiest cast member in this gaslight saga is Jean Marsh who plays Rose the parlour maid With actors screaming for residuals for summer re-runs and syndication to little Miss Marsh is sitting pretty since she with actress Eileen the idea for the series and is now raking in the royalties from the international sales. Both networks are giving the Canadian movie which can no longer be called the support of exposure denied by apathetic movie-goers and indifferent distributors But success for Movie- Canada still must be found at the box office. So here's the nudge to see The Apprenticeship of Duddy playing here next week.
