Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 12, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta CUPE members to pay toward strike fund Thursday, July 12, 1971 TNI UTHMIDOI HIRAID 28 CALGARY (CP) The pres- ident of Uw Alberta Division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees said Wednesday all CUPE members in the province have been asked to contribute per week to support the strike by union members at Edmonton's Royal Alexan- dra Hospital. "It would appear that the aim of the Royal Alexandra Hospi- tal Board is to starve the strik- ing members of Local 41 back to Les Hewson said in a news release. "The hospital board have re- fused to negotiate with their employees and have offered even less money than was rec- ommended by the conciliation officer "The conduct of the adminis- tration at the Royal Alex- andra Hospital is outrageous and I cannot understand how the government can permit a continuation of these practices by those irresponsible hood- lums" Mr. Hewson said he has "pe- titioned CUPE members in Al- berta to contribute per week to the striking hospital employ- ees" "This would produce per month to the strike fund. In addition, an appeal for funds has now been forwarded to all CUPE locals across Canada. "The hospital board has elect- ed to make this strike one of to- tal confrontation, and we are prepared to face them on that basis" The strike began June 11.
