Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 11, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, July 11, THI UTHMIDOI MUOO -17 system to cover oil spills at sea The first practical system for containing and recover- ing oil spills at sea has been developed by BritUh euro, the company says. The system, known as Vikomo Seapack and Seaskimmer, combines a specially-designed, inflatable boom to contain spilled oil with a skimming device to pick up the oil on rotating discs and pump it to a container. A single boom can contain some barrels of oil and several booms can be used fa deal with larger spills. The Seapack boom (at left) Is packed in lengths in a glass reinforced boat hull which, towed, automatically pays out and Inflates the boom to create the oil trap. The Seaskimmer device (below) Is at the prototype stage. In tests it has recovered oil at a rate of about 700 barrels per hour. Indians PARIS (Reuter) Claude Lcvi-Strauss, the inter- nationally-known French anth- ropologist philosopher, is step- ping up his studies of primitive tribes and myths to help solve some of the problems facing man in the highly-developed in- dustrial countries of modern society. He is working on a new book JOB the Kwakiutl, an Indian tribe which he visited in the north- eastern part of Vancouver Island earlier this year. He found the Kwakiutl have preserved intact their ancient rituals, initiation ceremonies, masks, songs and dances and living conditions. Levi-Strauss, 64, is returning to the Kwakiutl tribe later this year and hopes to live with them for some time to complete his research work. Known for bis initiative, phil- osophical approach to anthro- pology, he believes that there is logic to aU human thought and that primitive peoples an logical rather than pre-logicaL STUDIES MYTHS He has carried out extensive studies of myths as logical sys- tems created by man to solve problems which face him.
