Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 10, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta i HE LC i HDHIUUC Olympic logo A logo has been designed to be licensed and marketed in Canada to help finance the Canadian Olympic a marketing co-ordinating committee for the games announced Tuesday. New transcripts may add to Nixon's woes WASHINGTON President Nixon talked to his aides about a Watergate coverup plan and suggested they refuse to answer questions of the Senate Watergate new transcripts of White House tapes made public Tuesday night indicate. The transcripts were issued by the House of Represen- tatives judiciary which compared them with the edited versions put out April 30 by the White House. The two sets of transcripts differed significantly in many places. The more complete com- mittee made with the aid of sophisticated elec- tronic likely will add to President Nixon's prob- lems in his battle against im- peachment. The committee made from eight of 18 tapes that the White House handed gave more detail about discussions of the Watergate cover-up and payment of al- leged hush money to Watergate conspirator Howard Hunt. 'YES' FROM NIXON They showed a crucial White House meeting March former counsel John Dean told the president that Hunt should be given some signal that the White House would comply with his request for Nixon was quoted as The White House transcripts did not include Nixon's reply. At another point in the con- Nixon said he thought million might be found in cash to pay the Watergate defendants. The White House transcripts made no reference to cash. March the day after was paid to Nixon said in a discussion on how to deal with Watergate that former attorney-general John Mitchell's argument was to use flexibility order to get on with the cover-up plan The White House ver- sion had him saying in order to get off the cover-up Later in the same during a discussion of how to deal with the Watergate Nixon told Mitchell and other want you all to stonewall let them plead the fifth cover up or anything if it'll save it- save the The White House transcripts did not in- clude a 16-page passage that contained this remark. The new transcripts appear to damage the White House position that the president never approved payment of hush money and did not take part in a cover-up plan. They are the first instal- ment of thousands of pages of evidence to be made public'by the judiciary which is inquiring into the president's possible im- peachment. __ Committee lawyers have claimed that they have better- quality equipment with which to listen to the tapes than the White House and that they were able to decipher various portions of the conversations labelled unintelligible by the White House transcribers. In many the ex- pletives used by Nixon and de- leted from the White House transcripts were disclosed by the committee. The committee's Democratic Peter Rodino of New said in an introduction that the com- parison does not reflect all the differences between the two sets of transcripts. does not draw any con- clusions as to the reasons or the significance the dif- Rodino said. has been prepared solely as an aid to the committee in its Some committee members have asserted that some pas- sages were deliberately edited from the White House tran- scripts to reflect favorably upon Nixon. Release of the committee transcript was believed likely by observers to add to pres- sures on the White House to surrender 64 additional tapes supoenaed by special Watergate prosecutor Leon Jaworski. These tapes are the subject of a special appeal to the U.S. Supreme which is ex- pected to rule before the end of next week whether the president is obligated to hand over the tapes. The committee version of the tapes fills in several previously blank spots but still indicates the disjointed and often hard-to-follow nature of the presidential talks. The committee comparison shows the president suggesting during the March 21 meeting that he thought they could handle a possible obstruction-of-justice charge resulting from the Watergate scandal. On the obstruction-of- justice think that one we can handle. I don't know why I feel that but the president said. The White House version had him don't think on the obstruction-of-justice I take that out. I don't know I think you may be over that There was no explanation in the committee version of where the president's reference to the had come from. The Watergate grand jury earlier this year indicted seven former presidential including Mitchell and former White House chief-of-staff H. R. with conspiracy to obstruct justice through a Watergate cover-up. The grand jury concluded that a hush-money pay- ment was made to Hunt on the night of March 21 and named Nixon as an unindicted co-con- spirator.
