Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 10, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Arty 19, THE lETHMlOtt HMAID 19 Lynne Van Luven Mazie wasn't invited Mazie was in her front porch, staring at her mailbox when I visited her last week She seemed somewhat de- jected and barely acknowledged by greeting. She fidgeted for a few moments, peered into the depths of the mail box and sighed deeply. Suddenly, she bolted indoors to the kitchen where I heard her rummaging in several drawers. Shortly, she emerged, victor- iously waving a screw driver, "What are you I began, but Mazie waved me aside and proceeded to unscrew her mail- box from the wall. "You never she said, a hopeful but somewhat strange gleam in her eye. "It could be stuck inside, or it could have fallen behind." "Inside? Behind? What''' I implored, thoroughly befuddled. "My invitation, of re- plied Mazie loftily, "to attend the state dinner for the Queen I didn't linger very long Con- versation with TVae was im- possible. When I came back two hours later, I found her hunch- ed over her telephone, willing H to ring. "Sssh she commanded. "I'm sure there has been a slight mix-up in the mail delivery. Hie protocol office will be call- ing me any minute now, with apologies and a verbal invita- tion." Three hours later, the only phone calls Mazie had re- ceived were three wrong num- bers. Her faith was beginning to waver, so she made a call herself just to check, in case the postman had missed her delivery that day or there was an official registered letter lan- guishing in the mail slots, wait- ing for her to pick it up. The people at the post office were polite but firm Mazie hung up a crushed woman. She was impervious to my solicitations and words of con- dolence. Even comfort admin- istered with a stiff shot of bran- dy was lost on her. When I left her, she was mut- tering darkly while methodic- ally shredding the pages of her "Royal Family" scrapbook. Now, the royal flap is over, the pomp-and-protocol panic has died down and the few memorable moments of the Queen's visit are already fad- ing into past history. Even Mazie has gained her equilibrium, although she's still a trifle bitter she's dropped out of the IODE and refuses to stand at attention when the lo- cal television stations sign off the air at night. But, consider- ing all she went through, her rancor is mild. However, she has learned a k (in from her great disap- pointment: she converted 4be dress she sewed for Princess Anne's wedding. She now boasts the only flow ed organdy bowl- ing pants in Lethbridge.
