Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 10, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Five-Part Series On Manitoba THE lerHBRIDGE HERALD, FRIDAY, JULY 10, 1970 Colorful History Recalled Manitoba's colorful history will be recalled in a five-part CBC television series, Manitoba 100, Especially prepared to mark the province's one-hund- redth anniversary as a member of Confederation. The series will be seen on CBC-TVs Double Exposure each Friday at a.m., be- ginnirg July 17 on channel 7. The province's story will be told by means of historical maps, photographs and graph- ics, with scripts by Eric Wells and narration by CBC announc- er Maurice Burchell. The opening program, A Blot on the Horizon, goes back long before Confederation to the early explorations of the North American continent, which led to the discovery of the part ot the countrv now known as Mani- toba. It was in 1612 that Captain James Button made his firsl landfall about 150 miles north ol where Churchill stands today, proclaiming his discovery as New Wales, a possession of King James I. The first flag raised was the Union Flag ol England and Scotland. New Horizons, the second pro- gram, covers the early settle- ment, of Manitoba and the near- ly 200 years of warfare between the French and the English for control of Hudson Bay and the fur trade. The third program, Tarnished Sunset, tells the story of the formation of the Province of Manitoba the sale of the vast Hudson's Bay Company domain of Rupert's Land to the Dom- inion of Canada, the North West Rebellion, the trial and Jack Benny Will Headline Ttvo New Specials In 1970-71 Jack Beaay will headline two new one hour color specials for the NBC Television Net- work during the 1970-71 season for airing in November, 1970 and March, 1971, on dates to be announced. Announcement of the f o r t h- coming Benny specials marks continuation of a nearly 40-year relationship between the enter- tainer and broadcasting. Ben- ny made his radio debut in 1932 and shortly thereafter inaugur- ated his weekly comedy series on the NBC Radio Network. bis talents to television lu starred in his own series oit toth the NBC and CBS Televi- sion Networks.
