Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 8, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta 22 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Thursday, July 8, 1971 New Bulgarian president TODOR ZI1IVKOV Moves up fice VIENNA (AP) Bulgaria's Communist party chief. Todor Zhivkov, 59, who was also pre- mier, resigned Wednesday with his cabinet and was elected state president by the Bulgarian National Assembly. The move, anticipated for some followed general elections which gave the Com-] munist-dominated Fatherland Front 99.9 per cent of the votes. The Bulgarian, news agency BTA said Stanko Todorov was elected premier. Todorov, a 50- year-old economist and No. 2 in the party hierarchy, will intro- duce his new cabinet list to the National Assembly today. j Zhivkov, premier since 1962 and under whose rule Bulgaria registered the highest economic growth rate of any of the East European Communist countries, became state president after a new constitution set up this of- Nixon-U.S. faces decadence KANSAS CITY (AP) Presi- dent Nixon said here the United States is facing decad- ence that eventually destroys a civilization, but that it has the vitality, courage and strength to and strong. Nixon drew this picture of the U.S. in an informal talk to exec- utives and officials of the news media from 13 mid-western states. Nixon repeated much of what he has told similar gatherings from other regions. But he hit a new note in a reference to the 1 Archives Building in Washing- ton where he attended a cere- mony Saturday. To him, he said, the Archives Building has to be the most im- pressive in Washington because of the great documents it holds Declaration of Independ- ence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights. But he said the great marble columns of the archives re- minded him of the Acropolis in Athens and the Forum in Rome, which crumbled away with only their columns left. under arrest in Guinea PARIS (Reuter) A Guinean exile group said today that more than 5.000 persons have been arrested during the last few months by President Sekou Toure's government in Guinea. The Union of Guincans in Eu- rope said in a communique that more than 500 political, mili- tary', administrative, religious and other leaders in the city of Kankan were arrested, chained together, marched naked through the streets and beaten before being taken to Conakry, the capital. The exiles said those now under arrest include Informa- tion Minister Alpha Diallo and Forest Minister Tibou Toun- kara. Doctor jailed for hijacking STOCKHOLM (Renter) Dr. Vasilios TsironLs of Greece was sentenced Wednesday to years in prison for hijacking an Olympic Airways plane from Greece to Albania in August, 1969. He became the second person to be imprisoned in Sweden for a foreign hijacking. Last year, a Greek stonemason, Giorgios Flamoridis was sentenced to 22 months' imprisonment for hi- jacking an AUiens-bound Olym- pic Airways plane from the is- land of Crete to Cairo, Egypt, in January, 1969. Both men were given political asylum when they arrived here fall of No objections received to water diversion plan EDMONTON (CP) No ob- jections have been received from the public on an applica- tion by Cardinal River Coals Ltd. to divert two creeks just east of Jasper National Park to permit strip mining opera- tions to expand, a provincial official said here. Bert Boyson, provincial en- vironment derartment water resources engineer, said the I firm made the application in mid June and if it produces evidence of having publicly ad- vertised the diversion plan for two consecutive weeks after that, it could receive a permit for the diversion early in Aug- ust. Mr. Boyson said he expected the lands and forests depart- ment to file some comments on the firm's proposal which in- clude diverting the headwaters of Cabin Creek into Luscar Creek and divert a short sec- tion of Luscar Creek around the expanding open pit area. Lowry Blackburn, Cardinal's general manager, said the com- pany wants to proceed with the diversion work this summer. The firm employs 168 people in the area and has a contract to supply one million tons a year of processed coking coal to Japan. Complaints were filed earlier against the company because of coal dust getting into streams. These are being in- vestigated, Mr. Boyscn said. Courtship days arc over for Eddie's father HOLLYWOOD (AP) There will be no more courtship for Eddie's father. Bill Bixby, who plays a wid- owed father of a small boy in the television series The Court- ship of Eddie's Father, has of- ten been described as a deter-' mined bachelor. But a spokesman for the 37- year-old actor announced here that Bixby was married to ac-1 tress Brenda Benet in a July 4 ceremony at Malibu.
