Sun. ancl Everyone writes lines for script By DICK KLEINER CAREFREE, Ariz. (NBA) Shooting a television show ia the middle the desert as The New Dick Van Dyke Show does is a bit" different from usual Bollywood production. Nobody in Hollywood ever had to hold up production because of a sandstorm. But that's happened here the cast couldn't get to work when the winds started blowing and the desert sand swirled so heavily it took the paint off cars. That's rare, of course. Mostly the weather is nice and peace- ful. The whole atmosphere around the set is the same. It's the kind of company where the entire cast Dick, Hope Large, Nancy Dussault, Fannie Flagg and Marty Brill offering suggestions to improve the script. Every night, Bernie Oren- stein and Saul Turteltaub, the producer writers, rewrite the script, incorporating those sug- gestions they like. They have iheir own mimeographing de- partment. Each morning the cast gets a fresh script. The first script is white. The first revised script is blue. The next is green, then salmon, then yellow. 'If we need any more says script girl Marge Mullen, "we use with a black border." They were shooting a Ghow with Dick's brother, Jerry, as the guest star. He was playing Dick's brother, Mickey. The plot had him bring his fiancee [Barbara Rhoades) to meet Dick. The gimmick was that Jerry thought the girl was a travel agent but Marty Brill recognized her as a Las Vegas nude dancer. Dick wondered whether or not he should tell Jlerry the truth, that the girl came out oF a volcano on stage, covered with lava which took off all her clothes. He finally decided to tell him and had a speech in which he discussed marriage and how love and honesty and sharing were to marriage what the McCaffrey Drugs SALE CURAD ADHESIVE BANDAGES (60 ouchless) Reg. 1.09 BUY THE lit BOX AT REGULAR PRICE GET THE 2nd BOX FOR ONLY 1C "The People's Drug 41 D 13 SI. The final line was "And shar- ing is the cement and a house without cement is like a bridge without a river." But nobody liked Che line. They kept offer- ing changes but nobody liked the substitute lines, ei- ther. Finally, there was the Qny voice of Angela Powell, 10, who plays Dick and Hope's daugh- ter on the snow. 'A house without cement la like a volcano without she said. It fitted the situation so beautifully they decided to use it. The little girl beamed with pride that her line was used. But that's tbe way it is on this set everybody ia a writer. It seemed to me, as I listened to them cut and slash at the script, that often good lines were excised and the new ones weren't nearly as funny. "It's a great says Marty BrilL "We all help with the writing it's comedy by committee. When we're shoot- ing, it's a 24-hour-a-day job we think about the show all the time." This doesn't leave them much time for a private life, at least not during the shooting But Lhey have time off between shows, a week after every five shows, and then the whole sum- mer off after the season is done. All of them scatter at thai point except for Dick, who is now a dedicated desert-dwell- er. Flip's dream At Ore recent TUTS luncheon when he was given the "Broad- caster of the Year" award, NBC-TV's Flip Wilson reminis- ced out his school days So Jersey City, N. J.: "We could see the Statue of Liberty from our classroom. But the statue's back was turned to us, and the teacher used to say it would turn round to face us if any at us kids ever made something of ourselves. I want to make that statue turn around."
