NBC-TV will present a 90-nrin- ute motion picture dramatiza- tion of the life of the late base- ball star Roberto Clemente during the 1973-74 season, it was announced by Lawrence R. White, vice president, Pro- grams, NBC Television Net- work, at a news conference here. Clemente, all star outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, was killed in a plane crash on Dec. 31, 1972 near San Juan, Puerto Rico, attempting to fly relief supplies to earthquake victims in Managua, Nicaragua. "The telling of the Roberto Clemente story calls for great Mr. White said. "For this reason we have con- cluded an agreement with Screen Gems, whose produc- tion of 'Brian's Song' epito- mized those qualities." Further production information and casting will be announced soon. Mr, White said 'that Cle- mente's o f f-tbe-field activities would form a major focus of the motion picture. "The story of Roberto Cle- mente the man is at once enormously inspiring and over- whelmingly he said. "Through nearly two decades of major league stardom, Cle- mente never forgot his roots or his people, particularly young- sters. No charitable activity was too small to merit his at- tention, and, in the end, it was one of these missions of mercy which tragically claimed his life." During his 18 years with the Pirates, Clemente set numer- ous team and league records and was selected for the Na- tional League All-Star Team 12 times. He was the Nationa League's Most Valuable Play- er in 1966, and was named Out- standing Player of the 1971 World Series. He would have been 39 years old this August. Screen Gems' "Brian's Song' featured the life of Chicago Bear Football star Brian Pic- colo and his relationship with teammate Gale Sayers.
