Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 5, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta British TV viewers get help front show Herald London Bureau LONDON Bntish con- sumers look to cabinet minister Shirley Williams for laws to protect them But when they want more immediate help they get in touch with Esther the dynamic host of Britain's most successful consumer television program Her late-night Saturday show is watched by five million people It is a highly-popular scourge of GERRY SAGE THE CAMERA AND The most important thing in good picture taking is YOU and never forget It Any picture is only as good as YOU make it or see it Some people are born with the ability to see great pictures Everybody can cultivate this ability Please do not lust point the camera and click the shutter' The pic- ture must come from you You decide what you take pictures of you tell the people in your pictures what to do and you select the best position before you click the shutter Here are a few suggestions The majority of your pictures will be of people Your best pictures will show them doing something na- tural rather than standing stiffly saying Cheese Show your people build- ing sand castles washing the car barbecuemg those steaks saying goodnight prayers If your subjects are doing nothing create something for them to do Dont just stand them there They will be more relaxed too Be careful also that the action is not so severe as to blur Sometimes you must add color color bright- colored clothes flowers and so on You must move in on your subject Till the frame' Otherwise the subject may be lost In the background Lock be- yond the subject at your background If possible keep it clean and simple as it can provide a dis- traction such as power poles emerging from heads etc Only you are taking this picture Only you can create something to be proud of And remember it s almost as easy to do it right as to do It wrong KWIK KOLOR College Mill Phone 327-4884 shoddy bad service and crooked salesmanship It moves so fast and is so packed with witty asides and sight gags that one group of viewers recently told a BBC pollster they felt with ex- after it was over Some of the country's slickest tricksters also feel a little limp after their reputations have been left in pieces on the studio floor The title is Thats Life and Miss Rantzen was named female TV per- sonality of the year this month in recognition of her achievement in taking con- sumer affairs out of the bound volumes in middle class bookcases and into the centre of raging pub arguments for days after each show With her team of helpers she rattles through stories of exchanges of cor- respondence between aggrieved customer and evasive managing to make dreary tales about provincial confidence tricksters amusing For writers of the 200 letters a day that do not get used on the air she advises putting pressure on the offending company at the top to the manag- ing director by name is always a positive thing to do He may or may not see the letter but in my ex- perience complaints to a firm go down quicker than they go up and at least your letter will go down with a slip from the managing directors office pinned to it' The program's homework is pretty im- pressive When the team recently set fire to the stuffing of a sofa on camera there was a com- plaint from a plastics manufacturer that the stuffing had been called polystyrene instead of polyeurathane To safeguard the fire- proof reputation of polystyrene he asked them for a correction Asked to the studio to demonstrate the difference he stood looking rather crestfallen as both samples burst into flame in the same way as matches were applied Some of the program's stunts are assigned to puncture pompous adver- claims In one on-the street seg- ment Esther Rantzen sprayed on a heavily- advertised perfume and asked sheepish policemen and homebound clerks if the fragrance turned them into instant sex maniacs Another time they set up a camera in Savile Row and asked the impeccably- dressed passers-by to try to tell white wine from red with their eyes closed Four out of five failed the test Said Miss Rantzen judged it to be a refreshing little with just a hint of impertinence One of the programs biggest boosters is John Methver the director-general of fair whose job is to reduce injustices against the consumer and who recently suggested that it become a criminal offence for any shop to refuse to re- fund money for faulty goods good that this program does in educating the public is he said never miss it Miss Rantzen says her program the mickey but combines a real function in showing people what they ought to do when things go wrong ordinary peo- ple don't write to Shirley Williams and John Methven They write to me I'd like to see my pro- gram put out of business from lack of necessity but there's some time yet to wait for that day BUGS DESTRUCTIVE Damage inflicted by insects in Canada each year is estimated at more than
