Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 5, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Joan Waterfield Mass-murder spree depicted in 'Badlands' movie In Charles embarked in a series of brutal murders vhich terrorized Nebraska md shocked a nation. He was accompanied by 14 year old Caril Ann Fugate whose family was Starkweather's first victims. Starkweather went to the chair. Caril who still claims she was Starkweather's was tried separately and convicted of the murder of one of tne 11 victims. She was sentenced to life imprisonment and since age THIS WEEKEND at LEGION AND GORDON Vimy MEMBERS ANP INVITED QUESTS ONLY 15 has grown up in Women's Prison at Nebraska. Badlands is essentially the story of the Starkweather Fugate mass murder spree. despite the end title disclaimer which may be con- sidered with some since the producers in a canny piece of flackery trotted their film up to women's prison for a personal screening for Caril Ann. Miss Fugate wisely refused to comment on this mindless bit of cruelty. Not that Badlands is a bad it's just filled with ugly people. Martin here im- probably called Kit is mindless and lethal. He's found working on a garbage truck in small town South Dakota. The significance escapes. Thwarted in his joyless af- fair with 15 year old Holly he knocks off played by the estimable and too little seen Warren Gates. Dad's a sweetheart a meanly un- shaven sign painter who punishes his daughter by shooting her dog. Daughter now is a piece of putrid pubescence who tosses her dying catfish to gasp its last moments on the dribbles one small tear for dear old and tags along. And bang bang the murders go with Kit shooting for the gut everytime which allows for a nice bloody Summer Salesaratna NOW... while they last... And it's all so cold. Not only the killings but the film. Certainly Sissy Spacek and the other actors attempt to give some depth to their portrayals but dimension is lacking with producer direc- tor screenwriter Terrence Malick. Malick has the current prediliction for the big the wide horizon evoked so effectively in Sugarland Ex- press. His set pieces are beautifully composed yet self conscious. And while he in- dulges himself with flame and he has yet to come to terms with the people on his canvas. Perhaps it's all just too much. Humor took the joyride to the horror of an armed to the teeth Texas state police in Sugarland .Express. In Badlands it's the National Guard carrying everything short of a howitzer.
