Ph. 327-7244 Ulhbridge Self-help group formed EDMONTON (CP) Have you ever got into a flap when some little thing went wrong and felt that you just couldn't face the day? If so, you can understand the feelings that lead people to join Recovery Incorpo- rated. It's a self-help group of nervous people and former mental patients that helps them to learn to handle their fears, tensions and problems. Anyone with a nervous or emotional problem can join. The leader of the Edmonton group, identified only as Jack, describes it as a "do organi- zation." "People who join must be he said. The only cri- teria for joining is to want to help yourself. The Recovery groups were begun by Dr. Abraham A. Low, a psychiatrist and neu- rologist, in 1937. There now are more than 850 groups n the United States with a mem- bership of about Cana- dian groups are set up in On- tario and Quebec and in Cal- gary and Vancouver. Recovery members train themselves to cope with prob- lems by practising a number o f common-sense self-help techniques from Dr. Low's book, Mental Health through Will-Training, Jack said. The group meets once a week, beginning with a read- ing from the book. Then, for about an hour, members give examples of how they've used the techniques to help them through problem situations. Jack said they outline the situation and their feelings, which may include heart pal- pitations, dizziness, sweats, numbness, tremors or fears. Some have obsessions, com- pulsions or bizarre thoughts. Underlying is a basic fear of mental and physical col- lapse or of never recovering, he said. The rest of the group try to, pick out the causes, to support techniques from Dr. Low's book that might help or to point out other techniques they have used. The last hour of the meeting is for general "mutual aid, we call Jack said. The Recovery groups do not iry to replace the work of physicians or psychiatrists, he said. "Our advice to any member is that they must follow their doctor's advice to the letter before they even consider us." There is no time limit on a person's membership. "They keep coming until they get to the stage where they feel they've when they can go out into the world and cope wtih any situ- said Jack. There is a member- ship fee annually for the Ed- monton group for those who can afford to pay it, and collections are taken at meet- ings, Jack said. Recovery is registered as a voluntary, non-profit, self-supporting or- ganization.
