Chirac said there was serious discussion of widespread demands for setting up private television channels. He hinted that if the sweeping reform of the state- run radio and television ser- vice fails to produce results in cutting costs and improving the government might take another look at the possibility of introducing private television in France. The Office de Radio Tele- vision Francaise is to be abolished under the reforms expected to go into effect early next year. The radio and each of the three ex- isting television channels will be set up as independent and competing national Chirac said. They will be financed by state and the television tax is to be increased from the present a year to for black-and-white sets and for color sets. In the first and second television channels will continue to collect limited funds from short periods of advertising. There will be no advertising on the nor on the third television channel. Chirac said the third channel will be open to debate among all political and social apparently to meet previous criticism that the ORTF was weighted heavily in favor of the govern- ment viewpoint.
