(AP) President Nixon is de- scribed as appalled by what he regards- as "malicious, un- founded and scurrilous" sugges- tions that his purchase of an oceanside estate here involved improprieties. Press secretary Ronald Zieg- ler, hutting he believes an anti- Nixon plot is afoot, told report- ers Tuesday: "Apparently there are those who want to suggest wrongdoing on the part of the president. They cannot dp so because they have no basis in fact whatsoever to do so.... I don't know where this specula- tion comes from. I don't know who is stimulating this specula- ticn." Asked if he perceived a cam- paign to destroy Nixon, Ziegter I will simply let you wanted to know whether any Republican campaign funds or money from labor unions or corporations was used to help finance Nixon's San Clemente purchase. REPORT DENIED Cox's office later quoted him as denying that an inquiry was under way. It said be "did not have even the most. meagre knowledge of the facts" and thus could no wrongdoing to Nixon. Ziegler denied "categorically and absolutely" that any cam- paign funds or union or corpo- rate money was involved in Nixon's 1969 purchase of the San Clemente estate for million. The Nixon spokesman said the White House May 25 had observer of things that are hap- pening in our society." Ziegler's angry reactions wire prompted by questions about a Los Angeles Times re- port that special Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox had launched a preliminary inquiry into the purchase and improve- raant of Nixon homes here and in Key Biscayne, Fla. "A source familiar with the inquiry" was quoted by The Tunes as saying investigators PUBLIC NOTICES NOTICE TO CREDITORS AND CLAIMANTS IN THE SURROGATE COURT OF SOUTHERN ALBERTA JUDICIAL DISTRICT OF LETHBRIDGE IN THE ESTATE OF VICTOR VAL- ENTINE CHRISTIE late of Cardston, Alberta who died on the llth day of June, A.D. 1973. The May 25 statement said an unnamed investment company headed by New York industrial- ist Robert Abplanalp sub- sequently purchased from Nixon, in an unrecorded trans- action, most if the land sur- rounding the president's home. Another California news- paper, the Orange County Reg- ister of Santa Ana, reported that Nixon's estate was under- assessed for tax purposes million in visw of the orig- inal purchase price and of federally-financed improve- ments attributed to security considerations. Ziegler said this suggested Nixon or an associate sought a low assessment. "We have absolutely-nothing to do with tax assessments and that is a matter totally up to the county tax he said.
