Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - July 4, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta We UWIRIDGt HERALD -40A FURNITURE AND July 4, 1970 3 TRAILERS LICENCED NURSERIES TEACHERS FUR BEARING Presses Autonomy Campaign EDMONTON (CP) Local 1233 of the United Transportation Union has announced a campaign among union members across Canada for autonomy from the Cleveland-based international union. The union is distributing cards and buttons to be sold across Canada which would identify individual members as autonomy supporters. The union represents operating railway workers. John L. Pickett, secretary-treasurer of Local 1233, said that proponents of autonomy wish to retain affiliation with the United States union but want control of their own affairs. He said the next convention of the UTU at Miami Beach in 1971 will consist of delegates, but only 280 of Item from Canada. As a result, Uiat Caradian problems, resolutions and business will be swamped by an overwhelming American majority. Autonomy proponents want Canadian officers, conventions, policy and authority over Canadian affairs and funds, and plan to submit a resolution with these goals to the 1971 UTU convention.
