I have no interest in putting 'whitey' down." This was Sidney Poitier in a rare airing of his philosophy about race and film. He admit- tedly has "maintained a low profile" in the last two or three years, giving few interviews ,and limiting public appear- ances. He told his reasons: "Why is it that the public juiids a person up and then seeks to tear him down? I don't understand it. I've seen it hap- pen to Marlon Brando, who is a close friend of mine. They tried to do it to Doris Day, to Julie Andrews. "I saw it starting to happen to me. I was an appealing tar- get. In one year I had In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and To Sir with Love pictures that drew million, million and million. "People were saying, 'What right does any actor have to en- joy that kind of success? Es- pecially a black "So I began to get it. I had four marvellous articles in the New York Times. Than all of a sudden I had two articles aimed at destroying me. Both were written by blacks. IT COOL' "I played it cool you dig7 I didn't reply; I just made my self scarce. I knew what was happening. If there were 15 of me, I probably would have had no knocks at all. But I was up here atone. "I can't carry the load my- elf. I long since have realized he impossibility of carrying everyone's dreams. That's why 'm glad to see others coming along, guys like Jim Brown, Calvin Lockhart, Raymond St. Jacques and others. The rouble is that during this Ha- us of the film industry, no- xxly :s working, white or >iack." Poitier has angered some jlack militants by his portray- als of the black man in the white world and by his moder- a'c approach to race problems. He admitted that he has no in- terest in the "kill-whitey black" any more than he has in the "stop-the-niggers in-t heir- tracks and get them -off welfare white." 'I am more interested in showing the middle-class black that he can be effective and not by throwing Molotov cock- tails." said the actor. "I'd. like to show the doctor how impor- tant he can be healing, the law- yer in working for civil rights, the teacher in helping others to better themselves. 'And I'd like to show the white guy how he can work within the system fo hdp his fellow man." DIETRICH DENTURE CLINIC ROSS A. HOSACK Certified Dental Mechanic National Store Bldg. PHONE 327-0682 Japan auto ;irm hikes car price TOKYO (Reuter) The Nis- ,an Motor Co., Japan's second- argest auto maker, said here t had raised the price of its cars shipped to the United States by five per cent. The rate of price increase this year was higher than last year's wo per cent, because of the cost of anti-pollution and safety devices required and the possi- >ility of yen revaluation, Nissan said. The new prices apply to Nis- san's 1972 models, whose ship- ments have now started, the company said. Nissan, maker of Datsim auto- mobiles, exported cars to the United States and Canada during the first four months of 1S71. If the present boom in exports shipments to the two countries will substantially ex- ceed the original target of cars, which is higher by 40 per cent than actual sales last year, Nissan said.
