He will celebrate the anniversary of bis appearance that kicked oft his TV career on August 18, the date he told his now famous ugly baby story on NBC-TV's Show Starring Johnny Carson." Funny girl Lily Tomlin, whose satirical sketches Er- nestine the telephone operator won her a 'Cracked Bell' Award from Los Angeles telephone company workers (and an invitation to do Bell Telephone commercials from the parent is working on some new characterizations for next season. One will be a teen-age girl with a tough-minded slant on society. A special script is being tailored for a guest appearance by Dick Van Dyke on NBC-TV's "BUI Cosby Show." James Stewart, who will make his bow as a TV regular in his new situation comedy series on NBC in Fall 1971, has been set for a guest role on "The Dean Martin Show" this coming season. Other stars to whom Dino will be playing host include Pelula Clark, Rex Harrison and Orson Welles. Having guided "The Doctors" into daytime's Top 1ft, Jerry Layton has moved over to "Bright Promise" as pro- ducer of this steadily building dramatic serial. Two additional writers, Lila Garrett and Jean Butler, have been assigned to the series .Segments completed and slated for Fall viewing on "The Men From Shiloh" include "Follow the with Tony Franciosa, Kate Woodville and Noah Beery, and "The with Peter Lawtord, Howard Duff, .Lloyd Boclmcr, and Sean McClory Janet Leigh and Ma Lupiuo have been signed to guest-star in "The Anonymous Star" episode of "Bracken's World." The Everly Brothers' act is an ex- ilosive display of wide-ranging ;alent, balanced by soft ballads, quiet folk songs and easy hum- or. The theatre in the round ef- fect will allow Don and Phil to recreate excitement of the slab shows amd folk concerts ;hey have performed throughout North America and Europe. Ever smce their first major recording success of "Bye, Bye Lave" in the late 1950s, the Everly Brothers have enjoyed outstanding popularity. Their distinctive vocal style and ap- proach to music have had im- portant impact on the contem- sound as well as strong influence on other artists and song-writers. STARTED EARLY Don and Phil Everly never made a penny in sfoow business until they were 8 and 6 years old, respectively. Since then, hovyever, they have made up, for their early sloth. They were both bom in Brownie, Ky., the sons of Ike and Margaret Everly. The fam- ily moved to Chicago during the boys' pre school years, then to Sbenardoah, Iowa, where the mother asked the boys, "You both like to sing with us at home. How would you like to do it on The next night the new radio show, "The EverTy had its debut. For several years the family did a morning show before school hours, then a show later in the day. During summer va- cations, the Everlys worked harvest jubilees, revival meet- ings, square dances and tent shows. Then an offer came for the family to broadcast a country music show from a radio sta- tion in Knoxvilte, Tenn, It was here that Don and Phil began "Xperimenting with their own tyles and1 writing their own nusic. When the Knoxville radio show ended in 1955, Ike Everly .vent into construction busi- _ess and Margaret -became xsauty operator. The boys bead- ed for Nashville. For months they hauntec agencies and recording studios no success.
