Peron's death leaves new gap WASHINGTON The death of Juan Domingo charismatic and unpredictable president of opens a new area of uncertainty for his perennially troubled country. Having emerged barely a year ago from seven years of increasingly unpopular military Argentina has been deprived now of the figure even during 18 years of influenced and shaped her politics for nearly three decades. Isabel 43-year-old former dancer who was General Peron's choice for vice-president in elections last has succeeded au tomativally to the Argentine presidency Politically Mrs Peron appealed tearfully Monday to and adversaries to calm their personal and help her fulfil the mission God and Peron gave GETS ARMY SUPPORT As acting head of state after Peron's physical condition de- she had been sup- ported during the weekend by almost all of Argentina's dis- parate political blocs and by the armed forces. But the initial feeling among some Latin American specialists here after the death of the 78-year-old Peron was that Mrs Peron's rule might prove to be brief. A potential as seen from is for the Peronist coalition to dis- integrate sooner or later into the frequently hostile factions whose only unifying force has been Peron himself A logical step would then be forrMrs Peron to step down and for new presidential elec- tions to be called after a con- stitutionally mandated period of 90 days Analogies were being drawn here with the recent situation in France After the death of Gaullist president Georges Pompidou the Gaulhsts found themselves shut out of a final contest that brought Valery Giscard d Estaing to the presidency. The Gaullists still hold a majority in the National Assembly but their cohesion may be short-lived while the Peronists rallied a 66-per-cent vote behind their leader in the presidential elections last fall and control the Argentine there is a distinct likelihood that new elections tor president would bring out non-Peronist candidates in force Since his return from exile a year ago. Juan Peron had to contend increasingly with politically-motivated kidnappings and disillusion The dissillusion was strongest among the left wing who re- sented Peron's courting ot conservative labor and ousmess circles and his accommodations with the armed -forces Taking a licking Sally of on Mani- oulm extends her leg to Conservative leader Robert Stanfield in Ottawa so he can sign her cast.
