WHEN Raymond Burr start-ed working on NBC Television Network's "Ironside" in 1967, he told the powers-that-be at Universal Studios, where the series is filmed, that he had one cast-iron rule insofar as his crew was concerned: "I don't like change!" Burr, as Chief Robert T. Ironside, was willing to take a month or two for the series' crew to settle down to a permanent company, but after that, he said, woe betide the executive who ordered the change of as much as a floor sweeper. For practical reasons, the series rotates directors (this allows adequate time to work with writers, prepare the assignment and to accompany the production supervisor to Ihe locations, particularly when shooting outside the studio is required). However, the same six directors alternate on the series, which makes little change over the season. When his wardrobe man retired, Burr regretfully accepted a replacement. At first, he would frown at the new face appearing behind the whisk-broom and newly-pressed suit.
