Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - July 2, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - FRIDAY, JULY 2, 1971 AU-over sun tan for Bond role HOLLYWOOD (NEA) - Lama Wood, Natalie's pretty kid sister, is in Las Vegas where she's co-starring with Sean Connery in the new James Bond film, "Diamonds Are Forever." In one scene she's supposed to wear nothing but a small pinkie ring. She arrived at the Tropi-cana Hotel a week early. She said she had to prepare for her role - and that meant acquiring an all-over suntan for that big scene. The hotel people didn't mind, except that they were worried that Miss Wood's suntan acquisition plans would lure all the big gamblers away from the casino, to watch her big show at pool-side. She is providing a fund for 15 scholarships starting with the next academic year. Winners of 13 regional acting competitions will receive $500 scholarships and then two runoff winners, chosen from among the regional winners, will each receive another $2,000. The top two performers will be chosen from among the re- gion-J winners in a special program to be held next spring at the University of Southern California. The competition will take place in conjunction with the American College Theatre Festival, with some 245 participating colleges and universities. Miss Ryan described her action in setting up the Irene Ryan Foundation as one of gratitude to the entertainment business, which, she said, "has been very good to me." She added that she wouldn't be surprised if, her gift acquired the On The Ironside set (Concluded from Front Page) a "regular." Years of service as U.S. Marine in embassies around the world enabled the towering Lemon to fit in. The atmosphere on the "Ironside" set is not precisely that of "One happy family." It is more like that in the office of a busy and successful company. Burr is the boss and people working for and with him are properly respectful. On days when something strikes him as funny and his booming laugh is heard from one end of the sound stage to the other, the atmosphere is very relaxed. On days when the strain of looking into the kleig lights from his wheelchair position has given him a terrible headache, the cast and crew tread lightly. With a full-hour show to. be shot in six days, the luxury of dawdling to set up or light a scene cannot be allowed. "Ironside" is not the kind of show with facilities to encourage visitors to the set, but occasionally an exception is made. A pair of talented paraplegics, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne L. Capson, who serve as technical advisers on the series, have visited several times as have a number of foreign dignitaries with special interests in rehabilita tion of paraplegics. When not involved in shooting a scene, Burr greets the visitors, who invariably appear startled to see him rise from the wheelchair when the cameras stop and stride towards them with an outstretched hand of greeting. informal name of the Granny Awa' Sn- 'i her foundation was former so that her entire estate of over $1,000,000 could eventually be turned over to it. Until then she will support the program with annual grants. Dr. Alex Segal and Dr. James Butier of USC are co-ordina-tors for the competition finals, with judges to be chosen from the theatre, film and television industries. Miss Ryan will not be one of the judges. Travel expenses for the runoffs will be provided by Miss Ryap's foundation. Scholarship winners do not have to select theatre arts as a course of study, it was noted. Miss Ryan starred for nine years on The Beverly Hillbillies and before that was a veteran of vaudeville, radio and film. She marked her 50th anniversary in show business in 1967. Commenting on her foundation, she said, "Frankly, I will get a kick out of seeing- my money do some good while I'm still around." IRENE RYAN As Granny in. Hillbillies GLENDALE MONUMENTAL CO.
