Gel more out of life Take Ihe family lo o moviel By BOB THOMAS I HOLLYWOOD (AP) "What I want to make are films that will delight blacks and interest whites. I have no interest in putting 'whitey' down." This was Sidney Poitier in a rare airing of his philosophy about race and film. He admit- tedly has "maintained a low profile" in the last two or three years, giving few interviews and limiting public appear- ances. He told his reasons: "Why is it that the public juilds a person up and then seeks to tear him down? I don't understand it. Fve seen it hap- pen to Marlon Brando, who is a close friend1 of mine. They tried to do it to Doris Day, to Julie Andrews. "I saw it starling to happen to me. I was an appealing tar- get. In one year I had In th( Heat of the Night, Guess Who'; Coming to Dinner and To Sir with Love pictures that drew million, million and million. "People were saying, 'Wlia right does any actor have to en joy that kind of success? Es pecially a black "So I began fo get it. I hat four marvellous articles in th New York Times. Then all of; sudden I had two article aimed at destroying me. Hot were written by blacks. 'PLAYED IT COOL' "I played it cool you dig I didn't reply; I just made my self scarce. I knew what was happening. If there were 15 of c, I probably would have had knocks at all. But I was up ere atone. 'I can't carry the load my- If. I long since have realized e impossibility of carrying eryone's dreams. That's why m glad to see others coming ong, guys like Jim Brown, alvin Lockliart, Raymond St. acques and others. The ouble is that during this hda- ,3 of the film industry, no- ody working, white or ack." Poitier has angered some ack militants by his portray- Is of the black man in the hite world and by his moder- e approach to race problems, e admitted that he has no in- erest in the "kill-whitey black" ny more than he has in the stop-the-niggers in-t heir- tracks and get them -off elfare white." 'I am more interested in howing the middle-class black lat he can be effective and ot by throwing Molotov cock- said the actor. "I'd like o show the doctor how impor- ant he can be healing, the law- tr in working for civil rights, he teacher in helping others to retter themselves. "And I'd like to show the guy how he can work within the system Co help his ellow man." DIETRICH DENTURE CLINIC ROSS A. HOSACK Certified Dental Mechanic National Store Bldg. PHONE 327-0682 Japan auto Firm hikes ;ar price TOKYO (Reuter) The Nis- san Motor Co., Japan's second- argest auto maker, said here t had raised the price of its cars shipped to the United States by five per cent. The rate of price increase this year was higher than last year's wo per cent, because of the cost of anti-pollution and safety devices required and the possi- jility of yen revaluation, Nissan said. The new prices apply to Nis- san's 1972 models, whose ship- ments have now started, the company said. Nissan, maker of Datsun auto- mobiles, exported cars to the United States and Canada during the first four months of 1S71. If the present boom in exports shipments to the two countries will substantially ex- ceed the original target of cars, which is higher by 40 per cent than actual sales last year, Nissan said.
