Garrison came to national attention through his attempts to prosecute businessman Clay Shaw for what Garrison said was a conspiracy to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. JIM GARRISON Black Panthers turned loose DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit recorder's court jury acquitted 12 Black Panthers yesterday on charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the slaying of a Detroit police officer. The verdict came in the fifth day of deliberations. The 12 defendants were charged in connection with the shooting death last Oct. 24 of Detroit patrolman Glen E. Smith, Smith's death led to nine-hour siege by police of the headquarters on Detroit's West Side of the National Committee to Combat Fascism, an organizing arm of the Black Panther party. Three defendants were convicted of felonious assault in the case. They were Erone De-Saussure, Benjamin Fondrun, and David Johnson. If that amount is confirmed, it will be the largest cash holdup in French history, though less than a third of the record $7 million haul in Britain's Great Train Robbery in 1963. 9>- Claude Ryan, editor and publisher of the Montreal newspaper Le Devoir, will resign as co-chairman of the Committee for an Independent Canada within a m o n t h, the commit- CLAUDE RYAN ...
