Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - January 31, 1975, Lethbridge, Alberta Page 4 Hollywood movies promised mention Canadians are avid movie goers, flocking to see all the good ones and lining the pockets of feature film producers the world over except those few in Canada. On Tuesday at 10 p.m., ,CBC television's "Primetime will present a film essay by Peter Rowe on the Great Hollywood Scheme to mention Canada in its movies, stereotyping Canada in the unsuspecting minds of the world for generations to come, and heading off attempts to start a film industry in our own country. References to Canada in post Second World War Hollywood movies came about in a bizarre way. At that time, Canadians were paying out million per year to watch Hollywood movies, since there were virtually none being made at home. When Hollywood's Mo- tion Picture Association heard of a Canadian move to start a film industry right after the war, it sent its Canadian represen- tative, J. J. Fitzgibbons, to Ottawa with an offer. The offer, made to a federal cabinet minister, was that Hollywood would make numerous movie references to Canada to help offset the annual million drain supposedly -by stimulating American tourism in Canada. The offer was accepted. To back up his facts, film maker Rowe has inter- views with Blake Owen Smith, who actually visited Hollywood movie backlots urging producers to insert mentions of Canada in their productions; and a producer who tried to build a big film studio on Van- couver Island. The Hollywood deal has just come to light recently. Executive producer of Primetime is Sam Levene.
