Lethbridge Herald {Newspaper} - 1974-01-30,Lethbridge, Alberta Wedn**r.    M. 1t74-TM UTMMHOOI HffUlA-IT Housewife suggests bath sharing Fuel saving idea stirs controversy By KEVIN DOYLE LONDON (CP) - An innocent suggestion by a middle-aged housewife that men and women conserve scarce heating fuel by sharing their bath has bubbled up into a national controversy. Newspaper cartoonista are having a field day depicting Prime Minister Heath sharing, or refusing to share his bathtub with miners’ leader Joe Gormley Reporters are holding streetside surveys to find out how many people already, in fact, bathe together and at least two Tory MPs have expressed utter disgust at the cheeky idea, adopted by a local gas board as part of its advertising campaign. The housewife who won &10 Out-of-court settlement reached in damage suit CALGARY (CP) - Calgary equestrian Norma Myers and the National Equestrian Federation of Canada have reached agreement on an out-of-court settlement of a $150,000 suit filed by Miss Myers against the federation Aug 1, 1973. Lawyers John Marshall, acting for Miss Myers, and Aleck Trawick, acting for the federation, has reported that an abandonment will be filed in the Alberta Supreme Court as soon as Miss Myers has completed the final release papers connected with the case. Miss Myers was claiming $50,000 in general damages and $100,000 in aggravated damages for the alleged failure of the federation to perform the terms of an earlier out-ofcourt settlement The dispute rose from competition trials held in Aurora, Ont, in 1972. The federation admitted on July 19. 1972, that it failed to award four points to Miss Myers during the trials, held for the selection of a five -rider Canadian team to compete in the Munich Olympics. As a result of the points, Miss Myers did not ride on the Olympic team The federation agreed in the July, 1973, settlement to issue an apology and news release to the media and about 400 federation supporters, and to pay $6,000 in damages Miss Myers’ $150,000 suit, filed Aug 1, 1973, claimed damages for non - performance by the federation ($22) for her fuel-saving tip says sharing a bath can be “joUy good fun.” But Mil. Ida Jones, married for nearly 90 years, declined to say whether her husband approves of the idea of putting “a bit of romance into your bath by sharing Oie water.” A Berkshire vicar professes it to be a delightful experience The 70-year-old cleric says' “I have shared many, many baths with my wife. It is truly splendid ” RULES FOR SHARING A eentre-page spread showmg a nude man and woman in the bath complete with a detailed set of rules for sharing was carried by the tabloid Daily Mirror The newspaper says the gentleman will always climb in first to test the temperature and if he ia really gallant, he will sit “with his back to the taps and his bot-‘ tom on the plug.”    • The gentleman, according to the Mirror, never keeps all the bubbles at his end but spreads them around generously. He always passes the soap to his partner first and retrieves it discreetly if it gels lost He never sinks the plastic ducks. The lady, however, always cleans the tub This light-hearted reaction comes amid other idiosyncrasies as Britain's railway chaos increases and the coal crisis deepens. For example, in the Yorkshire city of Hull, Colin James, a Hollis Bros lumber factory worker, found someone else sitting in his factory chair, TOOK DRASTIC ACTION James, a hot-headed lad at the best of times, flew into a rage, grabbed his tool kit and sawed the legs off the chair. T^e manager promptly fired him and just as promptly, the remaining 500 employees walked off the job in protest. Now the workers are asking longshoremen throughout the country to refuse to handle timber cargoes bound for the Hollis mills. James appears to be having second thoughts about the chair and says he*s prepared to apolt^e to management if he can have hts job back as the union is demanding. But management is adamant. Managing-director Gordon Mitchelt says sternly: “The man was sacked for wilfully damaging! company property. As employers we cannot tolerate employees wilfully damaging property.
