The request came Tuesday from the Edmonton Union of Municipal Districts and Coun- ties, representing about 30 rural governments in central Alberta. John Cherwoniak, a 17 year councillor with the Coun- ty of Smoky Lake, says that if federal MPs and provincial ML As get pensions, then municipal councillors should too. He says the request has been made to the provincial government several times without response. Retired Alberta MLAs are eligible after age 60 for a pen- sion of a year after eight consecutive years or two terms in office.
